Three people have been injured in Birmingham city centre where they were stabbed this afternoon. 

West Midlands Police confirmed they were called just before 5.45pm but said the extent of the victims' injuries is not clear.

Minutes later a person was also stabbed in East London as emergency services rushed to Hackney Central station.

The three Birmingham victims are being treated at hospital as police investigate CCTV footage from the city centre.

A brawl is believed to have broken out as around 100 youths were reportedly hanging around in the area. 

Unconfirmed reports suggest three people were injured in a street fight that broke out shortly after a large group of youths had gathered at the scene, close to several bus stands.

The incident comes despite a heightened security presence in the city for the Conservative Party Conference. 

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said of the victims: 'The extent of their injuries is not clear.

'A police cordon is in place around the High Street and Dale End area.'

It's not thought any arrests have been made so far. West Midlands Police issued a statement earlier this evening appealing for information.

The force sad: 'Investigations are at a very early stage and CCTV is being examined.' 

One Birmingham Live reader said she had seen three people lying on the ground at the scene shortly after the incident.

Unconfirmed reports suggest they were males, but there is no further information at this stage.

Sophie Jamas, who was at the scene, said it took around 10 minutes for police to arrive in a Twitter post also calling for police cuts to end.

She wrote: 'Absolutely awful. I felt so completely helpless. I never want to see anything like that again. I hope the 3 are ok.'

Birmingham Live has received separate unconfirmed reports of three people being stabbed at the scene.

One reader said she saw the casualties lying on the ground in the aftermath. A tweet from the Police Inspectors account also suggested three people had been stabbed.

Aimed at Theresa May and Sajid Javid, it read: 'just thought you would like to know about this 3 handed stabbing down the road from your conference. Apparently some still claim it's not about police numbers. West Mids have lost 2,100 cops since 2010.'

Other Twitter users described up to 100 youths hanging around at the scene before the incident. 

Police arrested a knifeman in Hackney in a separate incident at about 6.30 pm following a stabbing on the London Overground. 

One witness said on Twitter: 'Avoid Hackney Central. Some guy just pulled out a knife on my overground train and the staff are saying he stabbed someone. Absolutely terrifying.
