New photo David Beckham reflects on 19 year marriage to Victoria after he called it 'hard work'

David Beckham has spoken candidly about his 19-year marriage to his wife Victoria.

During an appearance on The Sunday Project, the retired footballer was asked about the secret behind his successful marriage. 

He admitted that marriage is 'hard work' and said he and the former Spice Girl have faced 'difficult situations' over the years.

'I think marriage is always about hard work,' he said.

'You know your children, they want your time and they deserve your time, and we are hard working and we feel that is the right way to bring up our children.

He continued: 'To prove and to show to them that actually, you have to work really hard to be successful.'

The couple, who began dating in early 1997, share four children - Brooklyn, 19, Romeo, 16, Cruz, 13, and seven year-old Harper.

The father-of-four then referenced the family's recent British Vogue cover shoot and spoke highly of Victoria's success as a mother and fashion designer. 

'You know, we've been married for a long time now and recently did a Vogue front cover, which was all about Victoria's 10 years in fashion,' he said.

'The amount she's achieved in such a short space of time... four beautiful young children, you know, we have a beautiful dog. But obviously in her business world, to be on the front cover of Vogue, er, was a huge thing.

'And then we did a separate picture for another cover, but to have been married for the amount of time we have, it's always hard work. Everybody knows that.

Priorities: David said their kids are their top priority  

David's interview with The Sunday Project reportedly caused controversy.

Victoria was said to be 'embarrassed' and 'absolutely devastated' that the father of her children was so 'insensitive', insiders told The Sun.

A friend claimed that the star was 'in pieces' over the interview.

After a preview of it aired last week, focusing on their marriage, Victoria checked into a German retreat which specialises in emotional balance.

The insider dished to the publication: 'When Victoria was given the heads-up on Wednesday about David's interview, she was absolutely devastated.

'She has no idea why he would say such insensitive things and publicly embarrass her like this. As you can imagine, it was as if a nuclear bomb had gone off in the Beckham household when she found out.

'She was in pieces, and spent the next two days crying. To say it's not been the best of weeks is an understatement.'

Back in June, unsubstantiated rumours circulated on social media that David and Victoria were heading for a divorce.

But the power couple were quick to dismiss the reports, with a spokesperson branding the speculation a 'crock of s**t'.

After tying the knot in Ireland in 1999, David and Victoria have spent years defending the state of their relationship and denying claims they are on the brink of divorce. 

The power couple jetted into Sydney just hours before the interview aired across Australia ahead of The Invictus Games.  

Victoria looked noticeably downcast as they were photographed at the airport.
