New photo Wales Rally GB event sees boy rushed to hospital

A boy has been left fighting for his life in hospital after a crash involving two stunt motorcyclists in the popular seaside town of Llandudno, North Wales.

The youngster is in a critical condition at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool after being flown from the scene of the accident.

Two rally-cross motorbikes from Supermoto UK were understood to have collided head-on close to St George's Hotel on the promenade which was partially closed for the event.

Spectators at the international event have set up a fundraising page for him.

Daily Post photographer Ian Cooper saw the bikers spin around like 'rag dolls' as he witnessed the incident from just 12 feet away.

He said: 'They were going along the promenade going over a jump and turning around and doing burn outs before coming back towards each other.

'The young lad was on a smaller bike and he was heading back towards the jump right as another bike came over the jump.

'As he came over and landed the young lad was heading towards him and the young lad was right in the centre line and they both hit each other head on.

Sheets were brought out from the hotel to provide privacy for the boy while paramedics treated him.

The motorcycles involved were part of a display team putting on a show for the crowds at the Wales Rally GB event at 11.15am.

The accident happened at 11.31am during a gap in the final stages of the event.

Superintendent Neil Thomas from North Wales Police said: 'Our thoughts at this time are with the family of the child. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

'There were many people in and around the area at the time therefore we are appealing to anybody who may have witnessed the collision – and who are yet to contact us, or anybody who may have footage from their camera phones to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

'I'd like to thank all those who have already made contact.'

The crash caused the rally to be delayed until 2pm as the route to the finish line was changed.

The final stage of the rally, which has been taking place between Thursday and Sunday, was delayed before restarting with a reduced field of 14 cars.

A Wales Rally GB spokesman said its thoughts were with the family of the child.
