THE UK faces an Arctic blast this week, heralding an “early winter” bringing freezing temperatures and the first snow of the season.
The mercury is set to plummet to -7C in some parts of the country by Friday as a plume of polar air sweeps the country.

After balmy autumn temperatures reaching 18C, a rare weather set up will see snow showers in Scotland and northern England, with gale-force winds also set to lash some regions.
The Met Office warned Brits to wrap-up warm and brace for the cold snap, which is expected to last for at least three weeks.
Forecaster Steven Keates told the Sun Online: “After mild temperatures, it will be time for woolly jumpers and hats. Today will remain warm in most parts, with temperatures reaching 17, even 18C in the south. But a cold front is moving in, which will bring rain to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Parts of England and Wales could also see some rain showers by the end of today.
“By Thursday winds turn to the north, bringing cold polar air and much cooler temperatures across all parts by the weekend.

“There could be snow lying on high ground at the weekend, with temperatures low enough for wintry showers in Scotland and also in England, particularly across Lake District and the Pennines. But it will feel very wintry throughout the whole of the UK by the end of the week, so people should wrap-up warm if they’re out and about.”
But while temperatures will remain mild during the first half of the week, forecasters warn to expect chilly, foggy mornings and a risk of frost.
Strong winds will batter parts of northern England and Scotland, reaching 50mph in exposed and coastal regions.
And trick or treaters have been advised to wear warm, waterproof clothing on Halloween.
Mr Keates said: “There could be severe gales across northern Scotland, particularly in Orkney and Shetland. There is also a risk of high tides in the north east of the country.

“Looking ahead to Halloween, it’s going to be a chilly night with a chance of frost or showers in some regions, so dig out the waterproofs if you’re out at night.”
Today will see sunshine for many with thermometers again reaching 18C in some areas.
The warm weather will centre mainly around southern parts of England and Wales.
Stronger winds, thick cloud and the odd patch of rain in Scotland and Northern Ireland will see temperatures here hover around the mid-teens.
But it will still be unseasonably warm as the average UK temperature for this time of year is a much chillier 13C.
On its website, the Met Office says the weather in November will be “changeable”.

The forecast says: “Weather may be changeable and windy at times with bands of rain or showers, especially in the north. The rain could change to snow at times on northern hills.
“Cold nights are likely at times with a risk of ice on roads and pavements in the mornings. Towards the middle of the month, there are signs that high pressure may become more dominant to the north, bringing more generally settled conditions at times.
However, fog and frost would become more likely. Meanwhile, more changeable and milder weather may become established across the south, with some rain here at times.”
