New photo How America's worst crash in a decade claimed newlyweds, sisters and young parents

Newlyweds, a group of four sisters and young parents were among the 20 killed when a limousine loaded with family and friends on their way to a 30th birthday party lost control and crashed outside a upstate New York country store.

The 2001 Ford Excursion limousine lost control and careened through an intersection and hit a parked car outside a small country store in the town of Schoharie, near Albany, on Saturday afternoon. The crash killed all 18 people in the white limousine, including the driver, and two pedestrians. All 20 victims were adults.

Now the full scale of the tragedy has revealed as one family lost four sisters, and their three husbands, in that crash - the deadliest transport accident since February 2009, when Colgan Air Flight 3407 crashed in Buffalo, New York, killing 50 people.

Siblings Abigail Jackson, 34, Mary Dyson, 33, Allison King, 31, and Amy Steenburg, 29, and their husbands, Adam Jackson, Robert Dyson and Axel Steenburg, 29, were all killed in the crash. Amy Steenburg's brother-in-law, Rich Steenburg, was also aboard the limo when it crashed leaving no survivors.

Newlyweds Erin McGowan, 34, and her husband Shane McGowan, 30, who only tied the knot in June, were also among the victims, as were Matthew Coons and his girlfriend Savannah Devonne.

Eight of the 20 victims have not yet been identified.

The King sisters' aunt Barbara Douglas said the family were devastated by their loss.

'One just got married and that's what this was: her new husband was giving her a surprise birthday party,' she told the New York Post

'They did the responsible thing getting a limo so they wouldn't be driving,' Douglas added to NBC News.

She described all four sisters as 'beautiful girls, full of life' and said two were mothers.

'They had their whole lives ahead of them,' she said.

Douglas spoke of the family's tragedy while visiting the scene of the wreck.

'My brother and his wife are just overwrought,' she said. 'I don't know how to say it. Can't wrap your head around such a tragedy where you have four of your daughters die.'

Newlyweds Amy and her husband Axel Steenburg, 29, had hired the limousine to celebrate Amy's 30th birthday.

The couple, who only got married at St. Stephen's Church, Hagaman, in June this year, had met in the summer of 2015.

Axel, who worked in senior technology and development technology at Global Foundries, a semiconductor manufacturer, took Amy, who was studying nursing at the time, lived together in upstate New York with their bull mastiff puppy Lady. According to their wedding website, they loved trying new breweries and traveling, planning to visit Ireland for their honeymoon.

Amy is the youngest sister of the four who were all killed in the Saturday afternoon crash.

'I just wanted to say Axel Steenburg I love you more than words can say!' reads his newlywed wife's final Facebook post Oct. 3, just three days before the crash. 'You are such an amazing man and entertain all my crazy ideas. Even when I move a couch just to move it back to the original place. Thank you for being so kind and loving xo'

Steenburg's older brother Rich, 34, was also among those killed, the Times reported.

'It is beyond devastating for everyone who knew them all,' Andrea Hojohn Orokos wrote of the brothers on a GoFundMe page for the siblings.

Lester Andrews, stepfather to Axel and Rich Steenburg, said when he went to pick up Axel's dog on Saturday night, he saw dozens of cars parked in front of his stepson's house.

The couple, who doted on their young children, were aboard the limo to celebrate Abby's sister's birthday.

'Adam and Abby were amazing parents to these girls and taken much too soon,' a friend of Adam's mother, Sarah Maltzman, said.

'While families will step in and provide loving care for these girls, there will be expenses that we can help with during this time when we otherwise feel so helpless.

Another set of newlyweds, Erin, 34, and Shane McGowan, 30, had also got married in June this year.

The couple were close friends of the family and were headed to the birthday party when the limo crashed.

Shane's mother Susan Minicki McGowan said on Facebook, Sunday, that' 'Our family will never be the same after the tragic deaths of Our Son Shane and Daughter Erin…'

Erin's aunt, Valerie Abeling, described her as 'a beautiful, sweet soul — he was, too.'

The couple was married in June at a 'beautiful wedding' in upstate New York, Abeling said. 'They had everything going for them.'

Erin's uncle Anthony Vertucci added in a separate post, 'I don't even know what to say… just darkness and devastation for my family, Shane's family and all of the families involved.'

'My heart has stopped,' he wrote. 'Unspeakable tragedy that I can't comprehend and will never come to terms with.'

Erin grew up in Amsterdam, New York, and worked as an administrative assistant at St. Mary's Healthcare in Amsterdam, Abeling said.

Abeling added that her own daughter had also been invited to the birthday party but, thankfully, could not attend.

Susan Minicki McGowan, Shane's mother, shared a photo and tribute to her son and daughter-in-law.

'Our family will never the same after the tragic deaths of our son Shane and daughter Erin,' she wrote.

Erin Flaherty was friends with a number of the victims, who she said were 'together multiple times a week' and 'always hanging out'.

A friend of Shane's described him as a goofy, patient husband who was head over heels in love with his new wife.

US Army veteran Matthew Coons, and his girlfriend Savannah Devonne, were another couple who sadly lost their lives in the accident.

Coons, a former Infantryman, from Fultonville, New York, was a keen body builder and was a certified personal trainer at National Academy of Sports Medicine.

He lived with Devonne, from Broadalbin, New York, in upstate New York where they raised American Bully puppies.

Both were keen on sport and keeping fit, from their Facebook accounts, and were friends with the sisters and their husbands.

 Rich Steenburg

Rich Steenburg, 34, was the brother of Axel Steenburg, and had been attending his sister-in-law Amy's birthday party.

He too appears to be a keen bodybuilder and, like his brother, he worked at GlobalFoundries- an American semiconductor foundry.

He is married to wife Kim but it is not clear whether she was in the fatal limousine crash on October 9.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was the deadliest transportation accident in the US since a 2009 plane crash in Buffalo killed 50 people.

Witnesses say the limo was coming over the hill at more than 60 miles per hour before the crash which 'sounded like an explosion.'

New York State Police said the  2001 Ford Excursion limousine failed to stop at the intersection of State Route 30 and State Route 30A around 1.55pm on Saturday.

It traveled across the intersection and into the parking lot for the popular Apple Barrel County Store in Schoharie, where it hit a parked 2015 Toyota Highlander that was unoccupied.

Two pedestrians standing nearby were struck and killed.

The Schoharie County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police, and emergency crews from the Red Cross all responded to the scene.

Six ambulances, three fire companies, and two helicopters were at the accident site, according to the Albany Times Union.

New York Gov Andrew Cuomo released a statement on Sunday afternoon, saying his 'heart breaks for the 20 people who lost their lives in this horrific accident'.
