MANCHESTER CITY were left stunned when they were denied a Champions League penalty – and couldn’t resist a social media troll to make their point.
City were desperately looking for a goal which would fire them ahead against Hoffenheim having been forced to come from behind after conceding within a minute of the kick-off.
Sergio Aguero’s equaliser had set Pep Guardiola’s men up for the chance to get the away win they needed to kick-start their European campaign.
And when Leroy Sane burst through on goal midway through the second half it looked as though the moment to take the lead had finally arrived.
But after the German winger had nudged the ball past Oliver Baumann, the Hoffenheim keeper sent him sprawling to the floor with what looked clearly like he had taken the City star out.
Players from both sides stopped awaiting the penalty to be given, and even Baumann had the look of a guilty man.
But Slovenian referee Damir Skomina gave the appearance of someone who didn’t know what to do as the City players appealed for the penalty.
Skomina dashed to the scene of the tumble, then waved away the claims before giving a goal kick to the Bundesliga club.
Having chosen not to award a foul it seemed the only course of action would be to book Sane for diving, but the official did not even speak to the forward.
And City’s social media team covering the match summed up the feeling of everyone else who had seen what happened.
They recorded the denied penalty appeals and posted a gif picture of a cat looking wide-eyed in shock.
The decision looked to be a costly one as City toiled throughout the remainder of the game, seemingly on course for a disappointing away draw.
But three minutes from time David Silva popped up with the crucial winner – and probably saved Skomina more of an ear-bashing for his decision.
