"Many Photos" - Judge slams knife culture as ‘cancer on society’ as he jails private schoolboy for murder of 17-year-old Yousef Makki

A JUDGE labelled Britain’s knife crime culture a “cancer on society” as he jailed two rich teens over the killing of a pal.

Mr Justice Bryan slammed the 17-year-olds’ “unhealthy fixation” on blades that led to Yousef Makki’s death.

He said he hoped the legacy of scholarship pupil Yousef, also 17, would be that young people realised knives were not cool.

The judge added: “Knife crime is a cancer on society. It infects all sections of society. Knives kill and ruin lives. The best logic is that this message gets across and knives are regarded as uncool.”

Yousef was stabbed to death by his pal, known only as Boy A, in a fight following a failed attempt to rob a cannabis dealer.

He was knifed in the heart just a few hundred yards from the home of Manchester United star Paul Pogba in well-to-do Hale Barns, Cheshire.

Boy A was cleared of murder and manslaughter, claiming he acted in self-defence as Yousef was also armed with a knife.

Yesterday, he was jailed for 16 months for carrying a knife and perverting justice.

The other pal, Boy B, was given four months at Manchester crown court for possessing a knife.

Yousef’s family boycotted the sentencing. But his sister, Jade Akoum, said: “In eight months they will be back on the street and back with their families.

“We are never going to get Yousef back.”

It came as police confirmed they were investigating footage showing Boy A making a stabbing motion while listening to rap music. The clip was sent to Yousef’s family during the trial.

Boy A’s solicitors said it was meant as a private message to his girlfriend and insisted: “It does not reflect a lack of remorse.”

Sentencing the first teen, Mr Justice Bryan said: “The backdrop of your offending is depressingly all-to familiar where the possession of knives is deemed to be cool and aesthetically pleasing.

“Mixed with drugs and drug dealing, it is a recipe for disaster.”

More than 100 people yesterday gathered outside Manchester Crown Court chanting “no justice, no peace” in a protest for Anglo-Lebanese Yousef.

‘WE’LL KEEP FIGHTING’

Speaking to Good Morning Britain, Yousef’s mum Debbi Makki broke down as she said: “As a mum, every parent knows you will fight for your kids whatever and we never expected this to happen to us as a family so for as long as we’re all alive, we will carry on.”

During the trial, jurors heard how all three boys had indulged in “idiotic” fantasies of being middle-class gangsters – with the stabbing an “accident waiting to happen”.

Yousef had won a scholarship to attend the prestigious £12,000-a-year Manchester Grammar School and dreamed of becoming a heart surgeon.

But away from his wealthy family, Yousef and the two defendants led “double lives” and acted like gangsters, it was said.

They called each other “Bro” and “Fam” while riding around on their bikes smoking cannabis and allegedly filmed videos for social media carrying “shanks” – knives – while listening to Drill music.

Debbi, who was joined by Yousef’s sister Jade on the ITV show, said her son was “far from a gangster”.

She added: “He was into his sports, his basketball, loved boxing. Very, very kind – he was just such a popular boy. Everybody liked him.”

In dramatic scenes from the public gallery this month, Yousef’s dad Ghaleb collapsed as he exploded into a foul-mouthed tirade at the two defendants as they were found not guilty.

He had to be restrained as he repeatedly yelled “f**k you, you b******” as officials came to lead him away, while Yousef’s mum burst into tears.

The dad also jumped to his feet and screamed “where is the justice for my son?” as families of the two defendants wept and hugged each other.

Boy A had told jurors he felt threatened by the teen, who messaged his pal on Snapchat saying: “Ur getting stabbed when I see u. Swear down. I’m gonna kill u. U p***y.”

He said his memory of the fatal incident was “spotty” but said he acted in self defence after Yousef punched him and pulled a blade out.

Yousef died just hours after Jodie Chesney — a girl the same age — was fatally stabbed in Harold Hill, Essex, as she listened to music with pals in a park.

Their deaths took Britain’s grisly murder toll to 21 in 62 days this year as knife crime continued to spiral out of control.
