SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY star Fernando Forestieri has been slapped with a six-match ban and fined £25,000 after being found guilty of using “racist language”.
The Owls forward allegedly racially abused Mansfield’s Krystian Pearce, 29, in a pre-season friendly, which ended in a “40-man brawl” last summer.
Argentina-born forward Forestieri, 29, was cleared of criminal charges by Mansfield Magistrates’ Court in March.
A district judge ruled there was a chance Pearce may have misheard what the Italian had said because he was speaking in Spanish.
But the Owls star has not avoided punishment from the FA, whose independent regulatory commission ruled the case against him was sufficient to proceed.
The decision comes on the day the governing body announced an increase in a minimum ban for players found guilty of racial abuse from five to six games.
‘SHOCKED AND SADDENED’
Forestieri says he will appeal the verdict – and is eligible to play pending the FA’s response.
He told the club’s website: “I have now been the subject of allegations of racism for over a year and it has been an extremely stressful time for both me personally and also my family in both England and Argentina.
“Throughout that period of time, throughout both the criminal proceedings and the FA’s disciplinary proceedings, I have consistently and strenuously denied the allegations that have been made against me.
“Whilst I was shocked and saddened to face criminal charges regarding this matter, I was equally happy to be found not guilty of those charges in March 2019 by the Criminal Court and considered that to be the end of a very distressing time.

“As I said at the time, I felt vindicated by the decision of the judge.
“To discover I would then have to face an FA charge was devastating.
“But I truly believed that these erroneous allegations would be dismissed and my good name upheld.”
