SUSPECTS accused of sex offences and other serious crimes should remain anonymous until charged, Justice Secretary Robert Buckland says.
But the rule should apply only if someone has a reputation to protect, he said.
Mr Buckland told The Times: “Let’s say you are a reputable businessperson accused of fraud. Your good name is going to be undermined by this mere accusation. That might be a meritorious case for anonymity.
“Let’s say you are a person with a list of previous convictions. You’ve committed offences. Intelligence suggests other victims may come forward. Is that a case where anonymity should be automatic?
“It would be wrong to single out particular types of offence that could attract anonymity. That is misconceived.”
