FIFA have announced the ten-man shortlist for The Best Men’s Player of the Year, and Bernardo Silva was one glaring omission.
The usual suspects of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Eden Hazard, Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane are all nominated.
Joining them are Dutch duo Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie De Jong, Kylian Mbappe, Sadio Mane, and many people’s tip for the gong: Virgil van Dijk.
As ever with these awards, the names not on the list gained more attention than those up for the prize.
There was no space for any Manchester City player despite their domestic treble in 2018/19.
In particular, fans were annoyed that Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling missed out.
Portuguese playmaker Silva won plenty of individual awards to go with City’s silverware, including the club’s Player of the Year and Nations League Player of the Tournament honours.
Alisson Becker, who claimed The Golden Glove award in the Premier League, Champions League and Copa America, was also raised as a player who could feel hard done by.
As for those who arguably didn’t deserve to be there, some felt Tottenham Hotspur striker Kane was fortunate to make the cut.
The England man scored five goals to help his side reach the Champions League final but failed to lift a single trophy with club or country.

The shortlist was chosen by FIFA’s panel of experts, including Franco Baresi, Fabio Capello, Kake, Juan Sebastian Veron and Xavi.
And fans can vote on who should win the award with the decision evenly split between that poll and the nominations of national team captains, coaches and select members of the media.
The ten-man shortlist will be whittled down to three for the ceremony on September 23 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy.
Luka Modric scooped the award last year, followed on the podium by Ronaldo and Salah.
On Wednesday, FIFA also announced the shortlist for Best Women’s Player, Best Men’s Coach and Best Women’s Coach.
