"Many Photos" - Idyllic country cottage that once belonged to Out of Town presenter goes on the market for £850,000

The charming former country cottage of the beloved broadcaster Jack Hargreaves is up for sale for £850,000 - complete with the old potting shed in which he filmed one of his hit TV shows.

Hargreaves was famed for his nostalgic, rural life magazine shows Out of Town and Old Country, which was filmed at his home.

The bearded broadcaster also co-presented children's fun facts TV programme How? alongside Fred Dineage from 1966 to 1981.

He spent the final years of his life at Raven Cottage, in the village of Belchalwell, near Blandford, Dorset, before his death in 1994.

Now his 159-year-old house is being sold with his famous shed, which still contains some of his personal possessions including a brown shoulder sack and tools.  

Raven Cottage has three bedrooms and comes with a 3.5 acre plot, including a 2.5 acre paddock. The gardens include a vegetable patch. The current owner bought the home from Hargreaves' wife Isobel following his passing.

She died in 1998 and her ashes were scattered with his on the picturesque Bulbarrow Hill nearby. The property is being sold by estate agents Connells, of Blandford.

Ian Mudford, agent at Connells, said the Hargreaves connection is sure to generate interest among potential buyers.

He said: 'It's a historic building in itself but the Jack Hargreaves connection will interest a lot of people because he was so watched and so popular.

'We believe the current owner bought it from his wife after Jack passed away. There are still artefacts which belonged to him there, including one of his old bags and a few other bits and pieces, it's amazing, really.

'As for the house itself, it has many original features and a lovely family atmosphere with amazing views over the North Dorset countryside.'

Hargreaves became a household name presenting Out of Town on Southern Television and ITV in the 1960s. He was popular because of his distinct broadcasting style, walking and talking in the Wessex countryside without the use of a teleprompter.

How?, which Hargreaves presented alongside current ITV regional news anchor Fred Dinenage, ran for 250 episodes from 1966 to 1981.

The comedy character Bob Fleming who featured in The Fast Show in the 1990s was believed to have been based on Hargreaves. 

In his last broadcast, Hargreaves said of the site: 'Things are still as they used to be. I still spend about half my life in the shed, particularly in wintertime. I still can't resist mending things that were busted 50 or 60 years ago and I still can't throw anything away.'
