"Many Photos" - Dad, 66, was celebrating 35th wedding anniversary when giant 1.5-tonne rock crushed him to death on Cornwall beach

A DAD who was killed when a 1.5-tonne rock fell on him was celebrating his 35th wedding anniversary, his heartbroken family said last night.

Doug Curry, 66, was hanging a hammock on a popular beach near a Cornish cliff-face when he was crushed by rocks in a freak accident.

Emergency services including an air ambulance were called to Sandymouth Bay near Bude, Cornwall, at around noon on Tuesday, July 16.

A massive search operation was launched the next day when the tide went out and his body was finally recovered.

Mr Curry, from Hampshire, had been camping with his wife Maggie to celebrate their anniversary.

The couple were spending the day at a beauty spot Maggie had visited since childhood when the tragedy happened.

CAMPING TRAGEDY

The couple’s children wrote: “Dad and mum were camping in Cornwall.

“The two of them walked and spent time at the beach that Maggie and her family have gone to since she was a young girl.

“They celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on the 14th of July.

“On the 16th they set up against the cliff that we children remember from our childhood holidays.

Dad tried to string his hammock on the rocks close by but hadn’t had any luck, so went to try at another spot. He went to adjust his hammock and a large rock fell and took his life

“Dad tried to string his hammock on the rocks close by but hadn’t had any luck, so went to try at another spot.

“He went to adjust his hammock and a large rock fell and took his life.

“A lifeguard was nearby and was with dad in under a minute; he found that dad had already died.

“Thankfully, family and friends were able to join mum within three hours.

“All his children were there within 24 hours from around the world.

“We are thankful to have such a beautiful place to remember him.”

POPULAR BEAUTY SPOT

The National Trust beach is described as “very popular with both families and surfers and is set against a dramatic back drop of sheer cliffs.

“When the tide is out, the fantastic sandy beach is exposed and it is often much quieter than the other main beaches.”

A fundraising page has now been set up on the GoFundMe site by family friend named as RJ Macaulay and two others.

It says: “The plan is simply to help raise money for this very international family so they can attend the funeral and to ensure that Maggie, Doug’s wife, is provided for as she now becomes the sole breadwinner.

“She is a counsellor and, for now, is taking time off work due to the loss.”

FUNDRAISER

It adds: “We would also like to provide for her to be able to take a more-than-holiday, a pilgrimage to enable her to continue with this shattering new chapter in her life.

“The long-term need is to create a substantial fund for her.

“That is where we dare to believe the worldwide friendships they have made and the many lives they have influenced for good and for the Lord Jesus, come into their own.

“All funds raised will go directly to Maggie to use as she and her children need.”

Cornwall coroners office has confirmed that the inquest into Doug’s death was opened and adjourned on Tuesday, July 23.

The fundraising page has raised more than £2,000 towards its £20,000 target in just 24 hours.
