"Many Photos" - Piercing specific pressure points on your ear can tackle migraines, period pains and even hunger pangs, expert claims

MILLIONS of Brits struggle with headaches, migraines and period pain – but did you know a simple piercing could ease your health woes?

Piercing guru Ben Tauber, from New York, has seen an increase in clients asking for specific ear piercings after acupuncturists advise they could alleviate certain ailments.

The expert told the Mail Online that he targets specific pressure points, which are said to ease migraines, period pains and even hunger pangs.

The daith piercing – located in the innermost fold of your ear – is the most common piercing when it comes to alleviating migraines, while Ben explained the rook (which is the cartilage in the middle of the ear) is said to be successful in easing period pain.

“I’ve had a client who came in to get a classic Tash Rook piercing, which in itself is directly above the rook, but passes through the ear as opposed to down through the rook,” he said.

“They explained to me when they were talking with their acupuncturist that this was a spot that, when done, can actually help to alleviate severe cramps associated with their menstrual cycle.”

“Since I did that original one, I’ve actually had a few people come to me to request the same thing,” he continued.

“I’ve had a few of them come back to see me and they swear it helps.”

The expert also revealed a client who asked for an outer conch piercing noticed a difference in lower back pain and digestion, with another requested a tragus piercing to help with hunger cravings.

When it comes to alleviating pain, Ben explained his client’s acupuncturist will pinpoint the exact spot the needle needs to be placed, to make sure Ben is targeting the correct area.

It’s currently not known whether certain piercings are effective in alleviating pain – and it seems experts have varied views on the matter.

Acupuncturist Daniel Elliot told the Mail Online: “Many patients feel they have gained great benefit from acupuncture and so it’s natural they want to see if they could make that relief more permanent.

“As acupuncturists, we are constantly changing the treatment and therefore can adapt to a patients needs at that time, but there’s definitely a place for more fixed treatment.

“The daith piercing for migraines is especially the treatment that I have been asked about over the years.”

However, according to the Cleveland Clinic, daith piercings are a “highly unconventional remedy” for migraines.

The clinic adds that there is “no medical research that supports this theory” and that the only relief people are experiencing is due to a “temporary placebo effect”.

“I have a lot of clients who I have pierced to help alleviate some of their ailments,” added Ben.

“For many of them it worked and they couldn’t be happier, but for others, it hasn’t helped – however they still have a very cute piercing.”
