ONE person every three minutes is diagnosed with diabetes, research reveals.
The condition is a leading cause of blindness, amputation, impotence and heart disease — with 3.7 million sufferers in the UK.

NHS statistics show 202,665 are diagnosed with obesity-linked type 2 diabetes every year.
Experts estimate a million more adults are unaware they have the disease, which occurs when the body loses the ability to process sugar.
They warn the crisis is fuelled by the nation’s obesity problem, with nine in ten cases triggered by being too fat. Two in three Brits are overweight or obese.
It means that more than 12 million adults are at an increased risk of being diabetic. Type 1 diabetes is not related to obesity.

Chris Askew, head of Diabetes UK, said: “One person diagnosed every three minutes is a frightening speed.
“We need urgent action to prevent as many of the 12.3 million people at increased risk of type 2 diabetes from developing it.”
Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, said: “Type 2 was flagged up as a catastrophe waiting to happen in 2008, but the Government did little about it.”
