JAMIE CARRAGHER claimed Maurizio Sarri “really wound me up” with his treatment of Callum Hudson-Odoi.
The Sky Sports pundit was furious that the Chelsea boss criticised the 18-year-old’s England debut after only watching 20 minutes.
Before even starting a Premier League match for Chelsea, Hudson-Odoi made his Three Lions bow during the 5-0 win over Czech Republic.
But Sarri admitted that he switched off the Euro 2020 qualifier because he wanted to watch some of his other players.
He said: “I watched England for 20 minutes. He didn’t start very well on the right, but did very well on the left. I know he prefers to play on the left.”
Hudson Odoi was dropped to the bench again for the clash against Cardiff and Carragher took a swipe at Sarri before kick-off.
‘MY BIG PROBLEM’
The Liverpool legend said: “I have no problem with him privately saying that to the player, and maybe publicly is not the end of the world.
“My big problem about what Sarri said about Hudson-Odoi – and it really wound me up because I put myself in that lad’s position – he said ‘I only watched 20 minutes and the 20 minutes I did watch, he didn’t play that well’.
“This is a lad who’s making his international debut, why are you not watching the full game, number one?”
Chelsea want to tie Hudson-Odoi down with an incredible £100,000-a-week deal, but the 18-year-old is reluctant to put pen to paper.
Bayern Munich have voiced their interest, while Premier League rivals Manchester United have also been linked.
‘SUCH A STUPID THING’
And Carragher, 41, claimed that Sarri’s negative comments could damage the club’s chances of keeping him.
“Now you could argue he’s watching a number of his Chelsea team-mates, flicking through different channels, whatever.
“But you don’t need to watch them, these are about 27/28/29. This is a young kid, can he handle the spotlight of playing for England? This is a lad I’m trying to keep at my club.
“So don’t just dismiss this lad’s international debut, which will possibly be the biggest thing that’s ever happened to him as a football at a young age.
“I can imagine the people above Sarri just shaking their head and thinking ‘why are you saying such a stupid thing at the press conference?’

“I would not be surprised if the people at the top of Chelsea were on to the agent to try and calm the situation, because you can imagine how bad you’d feel.
“If he hasn’t watched it and he doesn’t think he’s played well, be clever and use your brain. Say you did watch it.
“But what he said about the player, of course he’s got to improve he’s still a kid. But to dismiss someone on their international, I think it’s a stupid thing to say.”
