"Many Photos" - That's no way to start British summer time! Hail, snow and gales to batter Britain

British summer time got off to a chillier start than the name might suggest and it looks set to get worse in coming days with gales of up to 60mph, heavy hail and even snow.

Following highs of 68F (20C) yesterday, Mothering Sunday had lows of 48F (9C) and the Met Office says that it's set to worsen in the coming days - and snow is even on the cards for some parts of the country.

Although northern areas had some bright spells this morning, frost is expected in north England and across Scotland, with temperatures expected to drop as clouds and wind increases.

The south-west has already suffered showers, with some relief provided by sunshine this afternoon. With highs of 59F (15C), Exeter is bucking the cold trend.

Norwich, Perth and their surrounding towns are being hit the hardest by the snap, which is coming in from the North Sea.

Gale-force gusts are due to reach 40mph in the south today, in a sign of things to come later in the week. Thunder is also expected. Tonight will see the first of the frost before the working week gets off to a windy start.

The worst-hit regions will the north and north-west but there will also be lighter gusts elsewhere. While southern portions of Britain will be largely dry with a few sunny spells, outbreaks of rain will dog the north.

Snow, sleet and heavy hail will hit the north on Tuesday and Wednesday, with sunny spells occasionally breaking through.

And northern regions will also have to contend with winds of up to 60mph in the midweek, as the severity of gales looks set to increase.

Yesterday as people enjoyed the last of the sunshine in parks and on beaches across the UK, the RAC warned of wild conditions hitting the Easter getaway as schools broke up.

RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: 'Stormy weather ahead is bad timing for the Easter rush. Motorists should check forecasts and plan journeys accordingly.'
