"Many Photos" - Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is appointed captain of the Danish Home Guard

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark cut an incongruous figure today as she swapped her usual high glamour for army fatigues as she was named captain of the Danish Home Guard.

The Tasmanian-born 47-year-old royal marched swiftly at the base in Nymindegab, south-west Jutland, to receive the honour, as her mother-in-law Queen Margrethe looked on.

The ceremony saw mother-of-four Crown Princess Mary with her hair tied neatly back and wearing a racing green beret as she watched troops parade before the honour was awarded.

The Crown Princess was joined by some 500 troops for the anniversary which marks 70 years ago since the country's Home Guard was established.

The royals enjoyed a parade before an official ceremony saw the 47-year-old wife of Prince Frederik officially receive the honour.

It's been a busy few weeks for the royal. Earlier this month, the 47-year-old visited Ethiopia with the Danish development minister Ulla Tørnæs.

The royal used her trip to the African country to talk about gender equality, as well as the rights and opportunities of women and girls.

Denmark's Crown Princess met with local female decision-makers, officials, business leaders and entrepreneurs during her two-day trip in the East African developing country.

The visit takes place a year after Denmark launched its first national campaign in Ethiopia.

Princess Mary is particularly engaged with promoting the rights of women worldwide. Earlier in March, she attended an United Nations round-table in Copenhagen for International Women's Day on 8 March.

UN Women Nordic tweeted after the event: 'Honoured to welcome HRH Crown Princess Mary of Denmark to the Gender Diversity Roundtable event to discuss diversity and improving Gender Equality in Denmark.'

In January, Princess Mary announced her non-profit organisation the Mary Foundation would donate to Afghanistan women’s crisis centre.

The organisation donated $50,000 (£37,800) to the centre, which was founded in 2003 by Mary Akrami and is part of the independent Afghan Women Skills Development Center. It was the country’s first women’s crisis centre.

The Mary Foundation also works to help victims of domestic violence, with the issue being one of their three major projects (alongside loneliness and bullying/well-being).
