THE Hubble Telescope has got into a spot of interstellar trouble.

Here’s what we know about the space scope and what has happened to it.

What is the Hubble Telescope?

The Hubble Space Telescope is a large telescope in space.

Hubble is as long as a large school bus and weighs as much as two adult elephants.

It shoots around Earth at about 5 miles per second, the equivalent of going across the whole of the USA in 10 minutes.

The scope faces outwards into space taking pictures of planets, stars and galaxies.

Hubble has seen stars being born, stars die and galaxies that are trillions of miles away.

It has even seen comet pieces crash into the gases above Jupiter.

What is wrong with the Hubble Telescope?

NASA’s iconic space scope has been rendered temporarily out of action.

Hubble went into a protective safe mode after another one of its orientation-maintaining gyroscopes failed, mission team members said on Sunday night.

Dr Rachel Osten, Hubble’s deputy mission head at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, said via Twitter in response to rumours the telescope was in trouble on Sunday: “It’s true. Very stressful weekend.

“Right now HST is in safe mode while we figure out what to do. Another gyro failed.

“First step is try to bring back the last gyro, which had been off, and is being problematic.”

Hubble has six gyroscopes, all of which were replaced by spacewalking astronauts during a servicing mission in May 2009. The telescope needs three working gyroscopes to “ensure optimal efficiency”.

Dr Osten added: “Not really scary, we knew it was coming. The gyro lasted about six months longer than we thought it would (almost pulled the plug on it back in the spring).

“We’ll work through the issues and be back.”

On January 9th, it was reported that the telescope is operating without its best camera after a hardware problem forced it to shut down.

When was it launched?

The scope was shot into the sky on April 24, 1990.

It marked the biggest leap forward in Astronomy since Galileo turned his telescope toward the heavens in 1610.

NASA named the telescope after American astronomer Edwin P. Hubble who confirmed an “expanding” universe, which provided the foundation for the big-bang theory.

So far it has made more than 1.3 million observations since its mission began.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”

Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
