New photo Britain named third best place in the world to work in survey of 22,000 expats

Germany has been named as the best place in the world for globetrotting workers, beating Bahrain and Britain.

Three quarters of overseas workers in Germany claimed that moving there had given them better job security, while 70 per cent said their work/life balance had improved, a survey of more than 22,000 expats by HSBC found.

Respondents told the bank that the country had the second best working culture in the world, behind Sweden, which came sixth on the list.

Britain was listed as the third best place in the world for overseas workers, moving up six places on last year's ranking and being labelled the best country in the world for those wanting to learn new skills.

Around three in five foreign workers in Britain also described the working culture as better than in their home country.

According to the survey, the three countries with the most expat workers in the UK were Romania, France, and India, respectively.

The two western European nations straddled a surprising entry in second place; the Persian Gulf island nation of Bahrain, which stormed 10 places up the rankings this year.

But the reason why it's there might be less surprising. Nearly four in five of those who had moved to the kingdom said their potential pay packet was larger than what they could earn in their home country, up from 62 per cent last year.

How were the rankings devised?

The rankings, which surveyed 22,318 expats in 163 countries, were based on the responses of eight career-focused questions:

 - the ability to acquire new skills

- the work/life balance

- the work culture

- job security

- career progression

- gaining personal fulfillment at work

- employee benefits received

- earning prospects

The report also found that 70 per cent of those who go to Bahrain for work also received an accommodation, airfare and medical allowance, while one in four received a bonus to help cover living expenses.

And if you're worried as an English speaker about not fitting in, your neighbours could include up to 500 members of the armed forces, after Britain opened a naval base in the country in April.

However, despite this, Bahrain isn't in the top 10 destinations for UK expats.

According to the survey, that's the United States, followed by Australia, and then Spain.

Two in five of Britons moving abroad for work said that improving their quality of life was one of the main reasons why, while escaping the British weather for a better climate was cited by 30 per cent.

The other nations in the top 10 best countries to work include countries well-known for being nations filled with globetrotting workers, including the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Singapore, and Hong Kong, while Sweden, the United States and Canada.

According to those surveyed by the bank, getting out of your comfort zone and making a move abroad can have benefits - 61 per cent of respondents said that working abroad can make you more adaptable, while 58 per cent said it made them more confident.

John Goddard, head of HSBC expat, said: 'The new year can often be a catalyst for considering where you are and where you want to be, particularly when it comes to your career.

'There's no "one size fits all" but if you're looking for career inspiration, it may be worth going beyond the borders of your home country to find the place where you can thrive at work.'
