A judge is set to rule whether the future of a 19-year-old with learning difficulties will be decided in the UK or U.S. following a trans-Atlantic battle for custody between his separated parents.
Hearings have so far been overseen by judges based in the Family Division of the High Court, and the Court of Protection, in London.
But lawyers representing the teenager, who is living with his Moroccan father in Houston, say the case has reached a stage where hearings should be staged in a Texas court.
A High Court judge is set to rule whether the future of a 19-year-old with learning difficulties will be decided in the UK or U.S. following a trans-Atlantic battle for custody between his separated parents
A High Court judge based in London has heard competing legal argument, over whether to retain control or hand the case to a Texan judge, at a two-day hearing in London.
Ms Justice Russell is expected to announce her decision in the near future.
She heard the teenager, who was born in America, had been taken from his home in England in late 2016 by his father.
Another judge had concluded the teenager was habitually resident in England at the time and had been 'wrongfully removed' against the wishes of his French mother, who lives in London.
The teenager is represented by staff from the office of the Official Solicitor, who provide help to vulnerable people caught up in litigation.
Barrister Zimran Samuel, who has been instructed by the Official Solicitor's staff, told Ms Justice Russell on Wednesday that a British judge could not make effective decisions when the teenager had been living in Texas for more than two years.
He said it is time for a judge in Texas to take charge of the case.
The teenager's mother disagrees.
Barrister Alistair Perkins, who leads the woman's legal team, said Ms Justice Russell should stay in control.
The teenager's father spoke to the judge via a telephone link from Houston.
He said the teenager is an American citizen and is better off in America.
Ms Justice Russell said the teenager could not be identified in media reports.
She heard the teenager's parents had been embroiled in litigation for more than a decade.
