Console gaming is always about getting better at things. You keep on playing games until you can master them, you hit up online multiplayer to become better than others, and when it comes time to it, you drop your current system for a better one. Playstation 4, it’s been a wonderful 4 years, but it’s time we maybe look into something a little more robust.
Hitting the market in 2013, the PS4 has been a monster for Sony and gaming in general. But as we all know, there’s always something better on the horizon, and the rumours about what Sony is planning, are too delicious to ignore.
The PS5, whenever it hits our callused and shaking hands, is gonna blow our mind-holes. But keep in mind, these are rumours on the internet. I don’t know shit about them being true or not, so don’t get mad at me. I’m just reporting the facts as I see em.

It’s coming in 2020
According to the rumours, we’ve got over a year of waiting time until we get our hands on this. A Reddit user, who’s been reliable for accurate reveals about upcoming Playstation announcements, predicted that Sony is skipping E3 in 2019 (they are), and that the PS5 will be hitting in either March or November of 2020.

We’ll be getting a reveal this year
While the physical console might not drop until next year, we’ll get all the details this year. According to the same source as above, at Sony’s PSX talk, there’ll be a reveal.
This official look at the new console should be hitting in August. We can wait that long, right?
Ubisoft
It’ll be 4K 60 FPS
If you already think that gaming looks pretty good, it’s gonna get better. This new generation is using AMD’s Ryzen CPU for its hardware, which makes this console a monster for rendering insane graphics and high-fidelity motion.
CD Projekt
It might go as high as native 8K
Sony is always forward thinking, so while 4K is a given for this new console, some websites are saying that there was an event in Tokyo that hinted that Sony is releasing a Crystal 8K TV, and that the PS5 can keep up with it; graphics-wise.

It’ll be backwards compatible
This is the biggest thing on people’s minds. Sony kinda fucked the pooch with PS4, and didn’t handle the implementation of Playstation Now very well. No one wants to pay an expensive membership or have to rely on streaming to get their favourite games back.
Some recent PS4 games will be playable on the PS5
Even if the new console isn’t completely backwards compatible, some of the games that were released late in the PS4’s life cycle will also appear on the PS5 as launch title, or at least have some sort of cross-generational support.
Can’t wait to replay Spider-man on the new console.

There’ll be cross-platform play
Sony has been a dominant force in this generation of consoles, but if you had to complain about something, it’s their reluctance to implement cross-platforming. This has taken off in recent years, with games like Fortnite & Rocket League offering cross-system support.
Unfortunately, Sony’s not a fan of this as of late. But hopefully, they’ll come to their senses and implement this. I’d be a huge selling feature.
Naughty Dog
The Last of Us Part II might be a launch title
Fans are anxiously awaiting this game, and we know it’s coming, but no one knows when. We’ve got trailers and rumours, and there’s a good chance that this might be the dramatic curtain call for the PS4 and release late this year.
Others are hoping that this will be remastered and launched with the new system next year.

It’ll be a handheld/console hybrid
It’s pretty evident that the PS4 dominated the Xbox One since it’s launch, and it seems like no one is worried about Microsoft anymore. The latest rumours position Sony as keeping an eye on Nintendo. Given that, they’re contemplating chasing after them in the console/handled dept, like the Switch. How that’ll be implemented, remains to be seen.

The console will still play physical media
While most are saying that the age of the disc is over, due to the convenience and relative ease of downloads, it’d be foolish to go all in on just this one mode.
Sony execs cite that poor bandwidth and the fact that while they don’t like second-hand sales, it’d alienate all their players if they just stopped making it possible. It’ll be a slow phase-out, with the PS5 the last to use discs.

It’ll launch at $500+
One of the biggest deterrent to upgrading your latest console to the next, is the cost. When the PS4 launched 5 years ago, it dropped at $400, so it makes sense that this one would hit $500. But remember when the PS3 tried to initially sell for $500. That didn’t go well.

The Dev Kits have already been sent out
What this means is the developers are already out there, trying to learn the architecture and tech of the system, to build their games accordingly. Since developers can’t afford to start building games too early and too poorly, this means that a reveal is imminent, and that it’ll be something we’ve yet to have seen before.

Death Stranding might be coming
The gaming world has been holding their breath for the latest game from Kojima, and it’s finally almost ready-ish. This game is an enigma, and people have been peddling rumours, theories and suggestions for a the past few years. According to sources, this might be the game to launch the new console.
Might be.

Most realistic rumour: The console is nowhere near ready
While the other rumours are pretty positive, there’s one sobering one; it’s not even close to being ready. Most experts believe that 2020/2021 is too soon and ambitious, based on all the things they’re saying it’s gonna do. Plus, the PS4 is still selling well, with no signs of slowing down.
Odds are, a 2023-25 release might be more in-line with reality. Or not. No one knows for sure.
What should we do while we wait for news?
Dance off, bro!
