Warner Bros.
So here we are, that sad lull between the end of the NFL regular season and playoffs, and the Super Bowl. It’s gonna be a long couple of weeks until we get to Feb 3rd, that’s for sure. So what do we do without football?
Might we suggest doing some pre-Superbowl pumping-up with these awesome football movies? They’ll at least soothe your wounded heart if you’re not a Rams or Patriots fan.
Grab a bud and a bag of pork rinds and lets get lost in some pigskin flicks.
Buena Vista Pictures
The Waterboy (1998)
Sure, it’s not a true football movie, but it’s Adam Sandler, back when he was funny. What more could you want?
First Independent Pictures
Big Fan (2009)
This under-the-radar indie film stars Patton Oswalt as a NY Giants fan who struggles with his obsession when one of his favourite players assaults him in a bar.
This unexpectedly dark flick just shows you how far fandom can go.
Warner Bros.
Knute Rockne, All American (1940)
This biopic about Notre Damme football coach Knute Rockne stars Ronald Regan as star quarterback George Gipp. This where where Regan’s unofficial nickname of the “Gipper” comes from when Rockne tells his team “Win one for the Gipper.”
Lionsgate
Draft Day (2014)
Even though there’s very little gameplay in the film, the whole “fantasy-football” feeling of draft day is captured in this movie. Plus, Jennifer Garner is a smoke show in it.
Universal Pictures
The Express (2008)
The movie was based on the life of Syracuse halfback Ernie Davis, who was the first African-American to win the Heisman. It’s a beautifully done film.
Warner Bros.
We Are Marshall (2006)
This historical drama was based on the real-life 1970 plane crash that killed 37 players on the Marshall University football team, and how the school and football program rebuild and cope with the loss.
It’s got some shaky direction to it, but the performances are stellar.
Buena Vista Pictures
Invincible (2006)
Mark Wahlberg has a knack for starring in true stories of regular guys who do something accidentally amazing. In this one, he’s a Philly bartender who tries out for, and makes, the Eagles at the age of 3.
If you like cheesy underdog stories, this one’s for you.
Warner Bros.
Any Given Sunday (1999)
This Oliver Stone classic is highly stylized and kinetic, but is such a damn good football film.
And that speech… that fuckin’ speech about inches… just gives me the chills. It’s perhaps the most motivational of all time.
Paramount
The Longest Yard (1974)
Nothing tops the roguish charm of Burt Reynolds as an inmate who leads a team of convicts against the guards in a battle on the gridiron.
Paramount
North Dallas Forty (1979)
This semi-satirical film is a highly fictionalized version of the late-60’s Dallas Cowboys. Showing a team that partied hard and played harder, this is a realistic glimpse of how insane a professional players life can be.
Plus, it’s got a young Nick Nolte, before he went uber crazy.
Buena Vista Pictures
Remember the Titans (2000)
In a 2-year period that gave us Varsity Blues, Any Given Sunday & The Replacements, we got this fantastic film about a coach who tries to integrate a high school football team .
Warner Bros
The Blind Side (2009)
This true story of NFL Offensive tackle Michael Oher has some Oscar-winning performances in it, as well as a really sweet and emotional story about belonging.
TriStar Pictures
Rudy (1993)
You know this one had to be on the list, right? Personally, I think it’s a bit overrated, overdrawn and I can’t really sympathize with Rudy (he whines a lot), but it’s still a classic football film that you need to watch.
TriStar Pictures
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Easily the most iconic and quotable football film. I defy you to claim you don’t know at least one line from this movie.
Oh, and it won Oscars too.
ABC
Brian’s Song (1971)
This is the only TV movie on this list, and really, the only one you ever needed to see. This is one of the few films you’re allowed to cry in, as you watch the beautiful friendship between Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, and the inevitable cancer that separates them.
Universal Pictures
Friday Night Lights (2004)
Before it was a popular TV show, this Peter Berg-directed film chronicled the season of an Odessa, Texas HS football team, their community and the socioeconomic and racial strife surrounding them.
The Weinstein Company
Undefeated (2011)
This amazing film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, and tracks an inner-city HS team in Memphis as they aim for their first winning season.
TriStar Pictures
When the Game Stands Tall (2014)
This semi-autobiographical film about legendary football coach Bob Ladouceur, who took the De La Salle HS Spartans from obscurity to a 151-game winning streak.
It’s not the best of them all, but it’s not half-bad either. It’s just a solid film about the great game.
Mmmmm… Football!
