"Many Photos" - Britain 'will pay France £6million for drones to prevent migrants crossing the Channel'

Britain will pay France £6m on equipment to increase their surveillance of North France in a bid to prevent migrants crossing the Channel, it was reported last night.

Sajid Javid, the Home Secretary, will reveal the plans today after a meeting with French interior minister Christophe Castaner in London.

Drones, CCTV cameras and night-vision equipment are included in the extra measures to pre-vent migrants crossing at any given time, the Daily Telegraph reported.

They will also discuss increasing patrols by Border Force and French boats to ensure keys areas of the Channel are being watched all the time.

This comes after concerns from MPs that the current measures have so far failed to deter migrants continuing their attempts to cross to the UK.

Thirty-nine more suspected migrants crossed the Channel this week and more than 200 have made the crossing in the last two months of 2018.

A French Government source told the Telegraph: ‘It’s in the interests of both countries. Britain doesn’t want an influx of migrants and France doesn’t want the northern French coast to become a magnet for migrants who see that it’s possible to cross the Channel successfully.

‘France is paying for policing of the coast, which costs millions and constitutes the majority of expenditure on preventing the crossings, which is why Britain is paying for the equipment. France pays for manpower and the UK for hardware.’

A joint publicity campaign will be launched to warn migrants that they are risking their lives at-tempting to cross the Channel.

Dover MP Charlie Elphicke said the introduction of aerial surveillance is a step in the right direc-tion.

He said: ‘I have consistently called for 24/7 aerial surveillance of the English Channel to ensure any migrants leaving the coast of France should be intercepted and helped safely back to the French coast.

‘The introduction of aerial surveillance is the right step to take and I hope the Home Secretary and his opposite number will put it in place as swiftly as possible.’

There are two British Border Force cutters patrolling the Channel backed by a Royal Navy patrol vessel with two extra cutters not to be deployed until next month.

Under the agreement to be signed off today, the UK will pay just over £6m (€7m), including nearly £3m (€3.4m) already committed under the Sandhurst Agreement signed last year to boost border security, plus another £3,100 (€3.6m).

Since 2014 Britain has paid £148m on security installations in the Calais area. This has included fencing around the Eurotunnel, lighting on motorways, CCTV and private security guards.
