NOW A streetwear staple, the trusty bomber has been hanging around since World War I.
It started off as a military flight jacket but the bomber as we know it – the MA1 – was first created in 1949.
It soon became a statement fashion piece for subcultures like skinheads and grungers.
But it’s only recently – thanks to brands like Acne and Vetements – that the bomber has entered into mainstream fashion, becoming a wardrobe staple for both men and women.
The undisputed queen of the bomber is Kylie Jenner. And like all things, she manages to make it look both street and sexy at the same time.
Her sister Kim Kardashian prefers a cropped shape – but also wears hers slung seductively off the shoulder to expose some skin.
But other celebrities have taken this piece beyond its streetwear boundaries to prove just how versatile it really is.
Gigi Hadid is often papped out and about a bomber – we like how she layers it up with leather leggings, heeled boots and a tonal shirt tied around her hips.
Jessica Alba, however, shakes off the jacket’s casual connotations by smartening it up with a pencil skirt and heeled sandals.
Invest in a bomber jacket now and you’ll be wearing it for years to come. Here’s how to slot into to your everyday wardrobe:
To work
In today’s casual climate sometimes a skirt and heels can feel too smart even for work but the good news is, a bomber can tone down the primmest of outfit. H&M has upgraded the classic MA1 in lustrous quilted satin.
