"Many Photos" - Moment thug swung a PICKAXE after aunt's racist road rage row

Shocking footage shows the moment a thug swings a pickaxe at a garage owner whose lorry had clipped his aunt's car.

John Thornley attacked the victim with the gruesome weapon at a garage in Moston, Greater Manchester after a row between the man and Thornley's aunt, Sarah Crone.

The axe came within inches of the mechanic's head before striking him on the collarbone during the row, which was caught on CCTV, in October 2017.

Thornley, of Manchester, has now been jailed a year while his aunt, who racially abused the man before the attack, was handed a six-month sentence.

Manchester Crown Court heard 42-year-old Crone, of Oldham, was driving her silver Nissan Juke on an industrial estate when her vehicle was clipped by the rear end of a low loader lorry belonging to the garage.

She erupted in rage and racially abused the garage owner, before telling him her nephew would come and 'sort him out'.

Thornley then turned up in his blue Audi Q7 and, without warning, flew at the man with his axe.

When the victim called the police, Thornley pleaded with him not to report him.

Thornley received a one-year prison sentence for the attack. He will serve half of that behind bars

When picked up by police, Crone claimed she had been attacked by someone at the garage and claimed she and Thornley left the scene because 'he was on the school run'.

Crone was jailed for six months after she was found guilty of assault and a racially aggravated public order offence. Thornley was jailed for a year for ABH. He will be released on licence after six months.

Speaking after the case, Detective Constable Terry Macmillan said: 'While the violence of this incident escalated dramatically and all from a minor collision, the CCTV shows the injuries could have been much more serious.

'We cannot underestimate the severity of this situation and thankfully he escaped with minor injuries but had he not reacted as quickly, we could have been looking at devastating consequences.

'Crone exercised her right to a trial and I'm pleased to say that the victim remained strong and resolute in his commitment to see justice done.'
