"Many Photos" - French girl dies when she is electrocuted by faulty shower and her stepdad killed trying to save her

A nine-year-old girl died when she was electrocuted in a shower and her stepfather was killed trying to save her, police said.

The child was showering at her home in the town of Arvert in south-western France when the accident happened at around 7pm yesterday evening.

Her stepfather then tried to rescue her while she was being electrocuted but also suffered a fatal electric shock when he touched the youngster.

The girl's mother also tried to save the pair and suffered burns to her hands, according to French media reports.

The woman, thought to be around 29, rushed into the bathroom to find water on the floor and tried to pull her daughter out of the tub, according to French outlet 20 Minutes.

She managed to turn off the power to the home despite her burn injuries before trying to revive the stricken victims, before being rushed to hospital in nearby Royan.

No other household electrical appliance was involved in the accident, police told local media.

A source told French TV station LCI that the family had only recently bought the house in the rural area and were carrying out renovations.

Police have not yet revealed how the family were electrocuted but a it has been reported that an electrical extension block of power plugs may have been put on the wet floor.

The source told LCI: 'This is a stepfamily with four children, one of whom was not always in this household, who had settled there a month, a month and a half and had started work. drama, the mother, her boyfriend, the nine-year-old girl and a four-year-old child were at home. 

'There seems to be a multiple outlet near the shower, and there was water on the floor, the mother's partner was the first to intervene, and the mother took the initiative to cut off the power before trying to save her daughter and companion, in vain.'

Port-mortems of the pair were due to be carried out today as police continue to investigate the circumstance of the accident.
