AN Iraqi Instagram model killed amid a spate of attacks on women in the country said she was “really afraid” just weeks before she was shot dead.
Brave Tara Fares was known as the Iraqi Barbie after defying threats and ultra-conservative religious edicts to pursue her dream modelling career.
But the 22-year-old was gunned down in a brazen daylight shooting by a suspected Islamist killer as she sat in her car last week.
Shocking CCTV footage shows the moment a callous gunman leans through the window of her white Porsche sports car and shoots her three times.
Chillingly, the car begins to slowly roll forward as tragic Tara lies dying in the driver’s seat — while her killer flees on the back of a moped with an accomplice.
Just weeks earlier the Insta beauty told her 2.8million Instagram followers that she was scared of those who would kill in the name of God.
She wrote in July: “I’m not afraid of the one who denies the existence of God, but I’m really afraid of the one who kills and chops off heads to prove the existence of God”.
The former beauty queen was shot dead in the Baghdad’s Kam Sara neighbourhood just a day after she was voted one of Iraq’s most popular social media stars.
The Iraqi Ministry of Interior and said they are investigating her tragic death — which also drew a tough response from prime minister Haider al-Abadi.
Ms Fares had been living in the more liberal Kurdistani capital of Erbil — but had been moving back and forth between there and the Iraqi city.
Her fans took to social media to hail her strength and willingness to speak out in a country that can still have conservative attitudes towards women.
One fan wrote: “Tara’s death screams discrimination, lack of freedom and right.
“Sympathy is not enough.”
Another wrote: “Really shocked at the tragic murder of Iraqi model Tara Fares.
“I knew her through a friend.
“Tara began her journey when she competed in Miss Baghdad contest in 2014.”
Her murder came just days after the killing of Suad al-ali, an Iraqi human rights activist from Iraq.
She too was shot and killed in her car in the southern city of Basra.
Two women involved in the beauty industry have also been reportedly murdered in Iraq in recent months.
In August, Rafeef al-Yaseri, the owner of “Barbie” beauty centre, and Rasha al-Hassan, a beauty expert in Baghdad, both died in mysterious circumstances in their homes.
The beauticians’ deaths raised concerns over armed groups targeting beauty centre owners.
This week The Sun Online told how a former Miss Iraq has also received chilling death threats.
Shimaa Qasim said in a live Instagram video on Sunday that she received texts vowing “you’re next” following Ms Fares’ death.

An extremist campaign is suspected of targeting secular “Westernised” women in Muslim-majority Iraq.
The defiant 23-year-old told her 2.7million followers that women in the country faced being “slaughtered like chickens” and branded Fares a “martyr”.
Prime Minister al-Abadi has ordered intelligence officers to investigate links between the killings and the threat against women in the public eye who live a Western lifestyle.
In a statement, he spoke of “evidence suggesting that there is a plan formulated by organised parties to undermine security under the pretext of fighting against depravity.”
