FROGMORE Cottage has undergone extensive renovation as Harry, Meghan, and their newborn son Archie settle into their new home.
Here’s what you need to know about their new home – and why the recent refurb has got some hot under the collar.
Where is Frogmore Cottage?
Frogmore Cottage is situated in the Frogmore Estate, boasting 33 acres of private gardens within the Home Park, adjoining Windsor Castle in Berkshire.
It was there in the adjoining grounds of Windsor Castle that the pair married on May 19, 2018, at St George’s Chapel, followed by their reception in Frogmore House’s grounds.
£300,000 was spent erecting a huge glass marquee for the occasion.
In recent years, the estate has been used for other royal functions, including the wedding reception after the Queen’s grandson Peter Phillips, 40, wed Autumn Kelly in May 2008.
When did they move in and when was the cottage renovated?
Harry, 34, and Meghan, 37, moved into their new home in April, a month before baby Archie Harrison was born.
Their five-bedroom property — a gift from the Queen — was said to have required a “substantial overhaul” before they were able to move in, including new heating, wiring and utilities.
And the subsequent refurb has cost taxpayers a whopping £2.4million – sparking fury from campaigners.
The couple’s new residence now boasts a designer kitchen and a refitted bathroom.
The main renovation took around six months but some work is still outstanding, such as repainting the exterior and landscaping the grounds.
Palace sources said that cost will not be revealed as it is “part of a five-year repainting and repair programme”.
Neighbours of the royals were given a list of “do and don’t commandments” at a residents’ meeting.
Locals have been told:
- Don’t approach or instigate conversation if you see the Royal couple
- Do say ‘Good Morning’ or some other pleasantry if they speak to you
- Don’t pet or stroke their dogs, even if they come over to you
- Don’t offer to walk their dogs
- Don’t ask to see baby Archie or offer to babysit
- Don’t post anything through the letterbox of Frogmore Cottage
They include royal staff, officials who live in grace-and-favour houses and Crown Estate employees.
Why did Meghan and Harry move there?
The pair initially lived in Kensington Palace, the same complex as their in-laws Prince William and Kate.
Nottingham Cottage was described as more of a “starter home” for the newlyweds, because of its small living space, and as far back as 2017 there were rumours that Prince Harry had his eyes on grander accommodation.
Their plans to move sparked rumours of a rift between them and the Cambridges, though the couples still seem to be on good terms.
When did Meghan Markle give birth?
Meghan Markle gave birth to a healthy baby boy on May 6, 2019.
Meghan and Harry were both in the dark regarding the baby’s gender, having opted not to find out until the newborn’s birth.
Shortly after the arrival of the baby, Harry gave a candid interview, revealing his excitement to be a dad.
MORE ON THE ROYAL FAMILY
He said: ‘We have a very healthy boy. Mother and baby are doing incredibly well. It has been the most amazing experience I could have ever possibly imagined.
