"Many Photos" - Victim stabbed on Broadwater Farm estate where mob killed PC Keith Blakelock

An illegal street party sparked panic on a notorious London estate last night after a victim was stabbed.

A man in his 20s was taken to hospital with life-changing injuries  after being knifed around 11.20pm at the Broadwater Farm Estate in Tottenham, north London.

Footage filmed from above shows dozens of youngsters milling about the street around 11.50pm last night.

Within moments the footage then shows terrified crowds running in the opposite direction.

Police said a 'loud bang' was heard by an officer but confirmed there was no evidence of a gun being fired.

Ahead of the party, residents warned one another to 'steer clear of the area'.

One local tweeted: 'Not that many will be anywhere near but there is an Illegal street party planned on Broadwater Farm Estate N17. Steer well clear there will be trouble.'

The Met Police said a man was found stabbed at 11.20pm and a 'bang was heard by an officer' at 11.50pm. No arrests have been made.

The estate in north London - referred to locally as 'The Farm' - has a particularly resonant history of violence. In 1985 devastating riots lead to the murder of police officer Keith Blakelock.

Last night's unrest brought back chilling memories of the infamous Broadwater Farm riot of 1985 which saw PC Keith Blakelock hacked to death.

The estate was also the home of Mark Duggan, whose death in 2011 sparked the Tottenham Riots.

A spokesman for the Met Police said: 'On Wednesday, 24 July officers were in attendance in the Broadwater Farm Estate area, N17, providing a low key presence at a pre-organised event.

'At 23.20hrs officers came across a man, aged in his 20s, suffering a stab injury. He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening or life-changing injuries.

'At about 23.50hrs, a bang was heard by an officer. Officers conducted a thorough search of the area and no evidence was found to suggest the noise was a firearm discharge.

There were no reports of any injuries. No injured persons self-presented at hospital. No arrests have been made in relation to the stabbing. Enquiries continue.'

'The Farm': Notorious north London estate where police officer was hacked to death in devastating riot

PC Keith Blakelock, a father of three, was murdered by a machete-wielding gang when he and a colleague tried to protect firefighters as violence spiralled on the estate.

Violence erupted after the death of Tottenham resident Cynthia Jarrett, 49. Mrs Jarrett collapsed and died from a heart attack while police were at her home carrying out a search the day before the disturbances.

On October 6, a small crowd gathered outside Tottenham police station and broke its windows.

Later that afternoon, two beat officers were attacked and seriously injured by a brick-throwing crowd.

A community protest meeting was followed by a police officer having his car attacked and then a mob attacking the police van called to help him. In the riots that ensued, PC Blakelock, 40, was killed on the housing estate.

After police baton charges, officers were forced back by rioters. As they retreated, PC Blakelock tripped and fell and was surrounded by balaclava-wearing rioters.

He suffered 42 wounds and his head was slashed eight times with a machete.

Two policemen were also shot and injured, and by midnight on the day of the riot 58 officers and 24 other people had been taken to hospital.

Petrol bombs were thrown during the violence, and cars were overturned and set alight along with shops and other buildings.

PC Blakelock was posthumously awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal.

A fresh inquiry into Pc Blakelock's death was launched in December 2003 after a review identified new lines of inquiry could be pursued.

Six people were originally charged with the murder, including Winston Silcott, Mark Braithwaite and Engin Raghip.

The three men were convicted of the killing in 1987 but cleared on appeal four years later.

Three youths were also charged with murder but did not face trial after a judge ruled their questioning was inadmissible.

One of them was Yardie gang leader Mark Lambie, who was jailed for kidnap and torture in 2002 after terrorising the Broadwater Farm estate.

Mr Silcott later accepted £50,000 compensation from the Metropolitan Police for their part in his wrongful conviction.

In 1994, two officers involved in the original inquiry were charged with fabricating evidence but cleared at the Old Bailey.

Ten years later police said they were confident of a breakthrough as they searched the garden of an address in Tottenham.

The painstaking search, a stone's throw from the murder scene, is not believed to have yielded any significant clues.

In 2005, police released images of Mr Blakelock's blood-stained overalls in a bid to encourage witnesses to come forward.

Investigators have repeatedly said people in the area have information about the identity of the killers they have not shared with police.

The Broadwater Farm estate was also the home of Mark Duggan, the self-styled 'gangster' whose death by police marksman sparked the Tottenham riots in 2011 which then spread to other parts of London.

Duggan was an 'elder' from the estate - a phrase used to describe people who are well-known and respected by residents.
