"Many Photos" - UK weather forecast – Met Office warns more intense thunderstorms set to bring floods, travel chaos and blackouts

TWO days of thunderstorms today and tomorrow will spark more life-threatening floods, blackouts and travel chaos, the Met Office warns.

The forecaster has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across Wales, South West England and North West England on Tuesday.

After an extremely wet weekend saw flooding hit some areas, millions will have to endure more intense downpours due to the storms today.

And on Wednesday a separate storm warning is in place covering much of Scotland, Northern England, the Midlands, East Anglia and South East England.

Homes and businesses are at risk of more flooding over the coming days – while lightening strikes could lead to power cuts.

Temperatures will also nosedive to highs around just 18C – a week after the country endured its hottest day ever with a high of 38.7C.

TRAVEL CHAOS

Weather forecasters fear the predicted floods, lightning, hail and strong winds could spark travel chaos.

The Met Office warned train and bus services may be delayed or cancelled, driving conditions will be difficult and roads could be closed due to flooding.

The thunderstorms and heavy rain may also spark blackouts, with fast-flowing floodwater potentially causing danger to life.

In its weather warning, the Met Office said: “There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.

“Thunderstorms and outbreaks of heavy rain will arrive across the far southwest early on Tuesday, then spreading further northeast across England and Wales and increasing in frequency during the day.

“In a few places there is the potential for 30mm of rain to fall in an hour or two and 40 mm to fall in three hours.

“Many parts of the warning area will miss the heaviest rainfall.”

FLOOD WARNINGS

Met Office meteorologist Mark Wilson said parts of the South West and Wales will see heavy downpours and could get between 30mm and 40mm of rain today.

The average monthly rainfall for the region in July is 81mm, he added.

Mr Wilson said: “An area of low pressure will bring the risk of quite heavy thundery showers into Tuesday.

“There’s definitely a risk of flooding.

“Thunderstorms are a concern – there could be as much as 30mm to 40mm of rain.

“That’s quite a lot of rain flowing in quite a short period of time.”

The new weather warnings follow a weekend of heavy downpours – with half a month’s worth of rain falling across parts of the UK leading to travel disruption and floods.
