"Many Photos" - This mind-boggling optical illusion is FLAT – but try telling your brain that

THIS mind-boggling spinning optical illusion is actually stationary and flat – but our brains won’t see it that way.

The abstract purple and yellow waves of this image appear to move anti-clockwise, causing some viewers to even feel slightly nauseous.

How we react to such phenomena is the basis for a new book by cognitive sciences professor Donald Hoffman, who believes we could be looking at the world around us all wrong.

The vision scientist at the University of California Irvine (UCI) claims that scientific approaches assume there is a pattern of neural activity that mean a nut tastes like it does or red appears how we expect – but says there are no formal theories to explain this.

EXPLAINING CONSCIOUSNESS

In The Case Against Reality he explores how people process two-dimensional images to create a 3-D environment – or how individuals use vision to construct the world around them.

In it he explores the concept, which comes from evolutionary psychology, is that humans have adapted in certain ways over time to survive and thrive.

He said: “I’m interested in understanding human conscious experiences and their relationship to the activity of our bodies and brains as we interact within our environment.

“That includes the technical challenge of building computer models that mimic it, which is why I’m working on creating a model that explains consciousness.”

Optical illusions have left viewers baffled for centuries.

This week Sun Online readers were asked whether an apparently coloured photograph was in fact black and white.

While another optical illusion bends the bounds of reality by apparently losing its colours entirely when you stare at it for just 30 seconds.
