"Many Photos" - Record one in seven prisons in England and Wales given worst possible rating as violence soars

A RECORD one in seven prisons has been given the worst possible rating as violence and drugs take their toll.

Official figures show that performance is of “serious concern” in 16 of the 118 jails in England and Wales.

Another 28 were of concern, half were acceptable and just 15 were ranked exceptional.

The Ministry of Justice also revealed the highest-ever number of fights between inmates (34,425) and attacks on staff (10,311) in the year to March.

Self-harm incidents also reached a record high of 57,968 – up 24 per cent – although deaths in custody fell slightly to 309.

Weapons were found on a staggering 9,785 occasions while drug finds soared to 18,435 and mobiles were found 11,448 times.

And the number of lags on day release failing to return to their cells on time soared by 55 per cent, while 62 inmates were released in error.

It put new former Prisons Minister Robert Buckland under huge pressure in his first day as Justice Secretary.

Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Wera Hobhouse said: “The new Justice Secretary must urgently get to grips with the deepening crisis in our prisons.

“Violence and self-harm in prisons is more prevalent than ever, and it’s getting worse all the time.

“Prisons are overcrowded, understaffed and failing to rehabilitate the people we send there, meaning more re-offending and more people becoming victims of crime.”
