It was far from glorious at Goodwood this morning as racegoers arrived to gale force winds and summer downpours at the usually picturesque West Sussex racecourse.
Many guests had come prepared for a day of inclement weather, donning plastic rain macs and carrying umbrellas - though some of these didn't fare too well in the gusty conditions.
Ladies seemed undettered by the wet forecast, donning strappy sandals and stilettos, with many opting for daringly short hemlines.
Today kicks off five days of top quality horseracing at the Qatar Goodwood Festival in Chichester, which attracts some of the best equine athletes in the world.
The highlight of day one is the newest Group 1, the Qatar Goodwood Cup, which carries a prize pot of £500,000.

Dress codes at Goodwood vary depending on the enclosure; Richmond is its most stylish and exclusive, so female guests are recommended to wear floaty dresses or an elegant top and trouser or skirt combination.
Gentlemen are required to wear a jacket accompanied by a tie, cravat or polo-neck sweater.
Organisers also recommend avoiding stiletto heels as the uneven ground can be tricky to walk on.
The Gordon Enclosure is slightly less formal while the Lennox Enclosure, popular among families, has no strict dress code, though many racegoers do still like to dress up.

Stradivarius will face a fresh challenge when he and jockey Frankie Dettori bid for an unprecedented third successive win in the Qatar Goodwood Cup.
Success would leave him with just one more hurdle to overcome in order to claim a second Weatherbys Hamilton Stayers' Million.
At first glance Tuesday's race might look broadly like a re-run of the Gold Cup at Ascot, where Stradivarius beat last year's Derby second Dee Ex Bee.
The difference here though is that there are three-year-olds in the line-up, and while the Classic generation feature only intermittently in the race's history, there is no question they add considerable spice to the mix owing to the massive weight allowance that they receive.
