A YOUNG motorist who killed her boyfriend when she fell asleep at the wheel after staying up all night partying wept as she was jailed.
Hannah Bowman, 21, had been warned not to drive because she had hardly any sleep after a night out with Jordan Wilson, 20, during which they downed toffee vodka shots.
But at 5am she decided to drive him back to his house – and crashed head-on in to a lorry.
She passed a breath test but admitted causing death by dangerous driving and a judge told her: “You must have fallen asleep at the wheel.”
Bowman and Jordan had visited a number of pubs in Whitehaven, Cumbria, on May 29 last year with his sister Lauren.
Prosecutor Francis McEntee told Carlisle crown court: “There is reference to the defendant drinking toffee vodka shots and also either lager or cider.”
IGNORED WARNING
They went back to Lauren’s flat around midnight but stayed up through the early hours.
The couple discussed driving back to Jordan’s house in Penrith, Cumbria, which was around an hour away.
But Lauren later told police: “I told them it was stupid and dangerous to drive back at that time of night given that they had not slept and had been drinking.”
Despite her warning, Bowman got behind the wheel of her Suzuki Swift at 5.10am and set off to drive Jordan home.
At 6am the Suzuki was seen to swerve on to the wrong side of the A66 near Penrith before mounting a grass verge.
It veered back onto the correct side, narrowly missing one oncoming HGV, but swerved again and collided head-on with a second flatbed lorry.
Front seat passenger Jordan suffered catastrophic injuries and died in hospital three days later.
‘HE PAID THE GREATEST PRICE’
Bowman, of Nenthead, Cumbria, also suffered serious injuries and arrived at court for sentencing last Friday on crutches.
The court was told she passed a breathalyser test after the crash.
Mr McEntee said: “The conclusion – and the only possible basis for the defendant’s guilt – is that she was suffering the effects of fatigue.
“This was the major cause of the collision. Ultimately the net cause for the sad loss of Mr Wilson’s life was the decision of this defendant, against the clear advice given that she should not have set out that morning.”
Jordan was a keen musician and was due to start a degree course in creative musicianship at London’s Institute of Contemporary Music and Performance last September.
In a statement, Jordan’s mother Lynne said of Bowman: “My family and I have to live with the consequences of her actions for the rest of our lives.”
His aunt Jill Spence added: “Jordan’s death has shattered us. He paid the greatest price and the family has been destroyed.”

David Wales, mitigating, said: “She has asked me to express her deep sense of sorrow, her deep sense of regret. She has asked me to apologise for her actions.”
Judge James Adkin told Bowman: “It is clear you had not had anything like sufficient sleep to undertake the journey you did.”
Bowman was jailed for 27 months and must serve a two-year driving ban when released from prison.
