French actress Clotilde Courau and her husband Prince Emanuele Filiberto have become the latest victims in a spate of high-profile burglaries in Paris after their home was broken into while they were on holiday.

The 50-year-old actress and her husband, the 47-year-old Prince of Savoy who is related to Italy's last king, had their 15th arrondissement home broken into on July 19, it emerged today.

Police sources told local media that thieves made off with at least £450,000 in jewels, but the final total is likely to be far higher.

Speaking to Le Parisiene, the source said: 'Only counting the most valuable jewels, the bill is nearly half a million euros.

'The investigations are complicated because this kind of burglary is rarely the work of amateurs.

'To sell the jewels it is necessary to have a good network of accomplices, since they are recognisable.'

The break-in came two weeks after Ms Courau had her handbag stolen on the Paris metro with her house keys inside it, LCI reports.

There is speculation that the burglars used these keys to enter the home, though it is not clear how they discovered the address and police have not confirmed this.

The pair, who share their home with daughters Vittoria, 15, and Luisa, 12, are just the latest high-profile names to fall victim to thieves in Paris.

Police reported a 16 per cent increase in break-ins across Paris last year compared to 2017 - which was already the worst year or burglaries in almost a decade.

But in the centre and west of Paris, where the most expensive apartments are found, the rise was even more pronounced - up 40 per cent.

In 2016, Kim Kardashian found herself among those statistics when she was robbed at gunpoint in a hotel in the 8th arrondissement in the west of Paris.

Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva also fell victim to a sophisticated burglary when £1.35million in watches and jewellery was taken from his 16th arrondissement home in December last year.

He is not the only PSG player to be targeted. Striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, defender Dani Alves and even coach Unai Emery were robbed between 2017 and December last year, as the crime rate soared.

Thieves seem to have taken advantage of the fact that they were out of the house taking part in high-profile matches in order to launch their break-ins.

It is not just individuals that have been targeted either.

In January 2018, five men burst into the Ritz in Paris around 6.30pm armed with axes and smashed display cases inside a jewellery shop at the famed hotel.

They took an estimated £4million in watches and jewels before making a getaway on motorbikes.

In April this year an almost-identical raid took place at the Peninsula hotel when two men stormed into the hotel and again used an axe to break into display cases.

While one man held the security at gunpoint the other stole items worth an estimated £350,00 before a third accomplice drove them away in a car.

Another sophisticated robbery took place at a Milleis bank on the Champs-Elysées roundabout earlier this year when a gang broke into the vault and stole from an estimated 30 safety deposit boxes.

The armed robbers rushed into the bank, tied up employees, placed a 'closed' sign on the door and then spent three hours breaking into the boxes before fleeing undetected.

Milleis bank is known to target high-end customers. The total value of stolen goods was never given.
