"Many Photos" - Boris’ incredibly colourful route to No10 from energetic London Mayor to Brexiteer in chief

BORIS Johnson has always been known as a colourful character, from his days as a journalist right through to becoming Britain’s 55th PM.

His route to No10 has been beset with a few embarrassing slip-ups, awkward gaffes – and a lot of laughter too.

Now Boris has finally made it to the top job in Britain politics, we take a look back at just how he got here.

Born in New York, Boris was educated at Eton and then Oxford.

He started off in life as a journalist, working for The Times, but was sacked for making up a quote.

Still, he went on to become Brussels correspondent for the Daily Telegraph, where his views about the EU were shaped.

In 1999 he left there to become editor of the right-wing Spectator magazine, which he stayed until 2005.

Boris was elected as the MP for Henley in 2001. before beings was selected to be the Tory candidate for London Mayor in 2008.

He successfully battled Labour’s Ken Livingstone and won, and then had to resign his set in the Commons.

Never one to shy away from a photo-op, Boris appeared to have great fun as London Mayor, regularly posing with fans, getting snapped at events and meeting politicians and celebs from around the world.

In 2015 he won Uxbridge and returned to the Commons as an MP, and stepped down as London Mayor in 2016, handing the reigns to Sadiq Khan.

In 2016 Boris was a key campaigner for Vote Leave, after spending some time deliberating which side to support.

This move seriously irritated the current PM David Cameron at the time.

But Boris was joined on the campaign trail with other Brexiteers including pal Michael Gove, Priti Patel, and Chris Grayling.

Most were as stunned as the rest of Britain was when Leave caused a huge upset by winning the referendum.

But Boris decided not to stand to be PM straight away, leaving the way for Theresa May to take power.

Theresa May appointed Boris as Foreign Secretary in her first Cabinet, as part of moves to reach out across the Conservative spectrum.

He served for two years before he quit in response to the hated Chequers deal.

He used the time in the spotlight to make friends and allies across Parliament.

And he also used it to try and influence Mrs May’s Brexit from inside the Cabinet.

He also built up a profile of himself among the public from his many speaking engagements and overseas visits.

From the backbenches Boris championed Brexit with several speeches and newspaper columns showing just why he would do a much better job as PM.

It’s long been speculated that BoJo would go for the leadership this time, and was the front-runner from the start.

The past few weeks has seen Boris travel the length of Britain to campaign to be the next PM.

He’s made his pitch all about delivering Brexit by October no matter what happens.

If he wins he hopes to snatch back votes from the Brexit Party and Lib Dems too.

Today Boris achieves his lifetime ambition to become Tory leader, and tomorrow will take his place as Prime Minister of the country.

He won the election with around 66 per cent of the vote and will become Britain’s 55th PM.

Brexiteers hope he will finally deliver our EU exit, 3 years after Britain voted to leave.

He’s vowed to get us out by October 31, whatever it takes.
