They have previously spoken of marriage difficulties following Cracknell’s 2010 horror bike crash in the US which caused a brain injury.

The double gold medallist said it left him with epilepsy, a changed personality and short temper.

Their split announcement comes as Cracknell, 46, prepares to become the oldest person to compete in the Boat Race next week when he rows for Cambridge University.

The couple said in a statement: “We can confirm that sadly we separated last year. Together, we remain committed to our amazing children, they are our absolute priority.”

Beverley, 45, is a TV and radio presenter, and a pregnancy expert.

Last year Beverley told a magazine: “We have had to work quite hard to make sure our relationship is ok because the kids would quite like us to stay together.” But she added: “The reality is every relationship will go a bit sh**.”

Cracknell is studying human evolution at Cambridge University.
