"Many Photos" - Love Island’s Jack Fincham reveals he was scared to leave the house and cried to his mum constantly after being crippled with depression

JACK Fincham has revealed that his crippling anxiety and depression left him crying to his mum and too scared to leave the house ahead of finding fame on Love Island.

The 27-year-old reality star started to struggle with his mental health at the age of 13, but it worsened between the ages of 19 and 21.

Speaking openly to GQ magazine, Jack shared: “I used to take citalopram, which is an antidepressant, and I also took beta blockers for anxiety, propranolol.

“It came sort of out of nowhere and I told my mum and stuff and got signed off from work with it.

“I was just scared to go out of the house. I was worried about things that weren’t happening. I thought I was going mad.”

Initially, the Love Island hunk was reluctant to admit that he needed professional help, admitting that he wouldn’t see a doctor and instead “cried to his mum”.

He continued: “I thought if I said it out loud to a doctor then it would make it real.

“I didn’t want to believe that this was happening to me – or why it was happening to me.”

Jack has also struggled with negative comments since finding fame on the ITV2 dating show, confessing that he gets a lot of “nasty” messages from vile online trolls.

He added: “Just because you’re on TV it doesn’t mean you’ve become bulletproof.”

Jack’s comments come less than two weeks after 2017 Love Island star Mike Thalassitis took his own life – with ex-Islander Sophie Gradon also being found dead last June.

The tragic deaths sparked a national debate on after care for reality stars, with Love Island bosses confirming that they have changed their safeguards for all of their former and future contestants.

It said that therapy will be offered to “all Islanders and not only those that reach out to us”.

They will also provide social media training and financial management advice.

YOU'RE NOT ALONE

EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide.

It doesn’t discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.

It’s the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.

And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.

Yet it’s rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.

That is why The Sun launched the You’re Not Alone campaign.

The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.

Let’s all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others.

You’re Not Alone.

If you, or anyone you know, needs help dealing with mental health problems, the following organisations provide support:
