UEFA have confirmed that Erik Lamela scored the 8,000th Champions League goal last night – not Antoine Griezmann.

It was originally claimed that Atletico Madrid’s star striker hit the landmark after netting a brace against Club Brugge at the Wanda Metropolitano.

However, UEFA have now corrected themselves after admitting a mistake was made.

And instead it’s Spurs ace Lamela who bagged the 8,000th strike after finding the back of the net in the 4-2 defeat to Barcelona at Wembley.

UEFA tweeted: “UEFA apologises for the erroneous statistic published last night regarding the scorer of the 8,000th UEFA Champions League goal.

“This occurred due to a database error. The correct scorer for Erik Lamela for Tottenham against Barcelona.”

It all went wrong for Spurs yesterday as Lionel Messi and Co ran riot in North London.

Mauricio Pochettino was far from impressed as he slammed his side’s performance after the final whistle.

Poch said: “When you concede in less than two minutes, it changes everything completely. The emotion is tough when you are playing against Barcelona and players like Messi and Luis Suarez.

“If you watch football and understand it, you will know how hard it is to come out of the dressing room and find yourself 1-0 down so early. When you play at this level, you can’t concede these types of chances – and we paid for that in the end.”
