New photo Senator Grassley says women are deterred from Judiciary Committee because of heavy workload

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley said that there aren't many women on the Senate Judiciary Committee because 'it's a lot of work'.

The 85-year-old Republican chairman shocked reporters when they asked about the Committee's inability to attract more Republican women onto the council.

'It's a lot of work - maybe they don't want to do it,' he said to the Wall Street Journal

'My chief of staff of 33 years tells me we’ve tried to recruit women and we couldn’t get the job done,' he added.

But he quickly backtracked and clarified his remarks adding it's difficult to recruit male senators to the committee as well.

'We have a hard time getting men on the committee. It’s just a lot of work whether you’re a man or a woman, it doesn’t matter,' he said.

'Do you know that we have got four people that are on the committee because the leader asked them to be there? Because they couldn’t fill the seats up,' he added.

He went so far as to commend female senators for working harder than men in their same position.

'On average, any woman in the United States Senate, whether they’re on Judiciary or any other committee, probably works harder than the average man,' he said.

There are 21 Senators on Judiciary committee. All of the Republicans are men while four of the Democrats are women led by ranking member Senator Dianne Feinstein of California.

The striking predominance of men on the Committee was brought to light during Christine Blasey Ford's hearing, which led Republicans to hire female prosecutor Rachel Mitchell to question Ford on her sexual assault allegations.

Reporters asked Grassley why senators weren't attracted to joining the panel, but he was stumped.

'Well, I love it. I've been on it 38 years,' he said.

He said he predicts that the number female senators on the committee would likely increase come January. A Republican female senator has never served on the committee before.

He added that there should be more female represenation on the Supreme Court as well.

'Probably five would be about right,' he said on the court which currently as three judges - Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Justice Elena Kagan, and Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

He made his comments on the Senate floor where Senator Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski spoke on the reasons behind their votes on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
