New photo Mum tells of heartbreak after daughter 22, died after taking ecstasy before distraught little sister, 17, killed herself

THE sister of a student who died after taking a £7 ecstasy pill took her own life following the tragedy, their devastated mum has revealed.

Joana Burns, 22, was celebrating finishing her maths degree at Sheffield University when she took Class A drug MDMA.

Her little sister Marcia, 17, committed suicide less than three months later, in August last year.

Now their mum Mosca has spoken out as a warning to others about the dangers of experimenting with drugs.

She told The Daily Mail of her heartache at losing her two “gentle, sweet and thoughtful” daughters.

Mrs Burns, of Alfreton, Derbyshire, said: “Joana’s death affected Marcia very deeply, but she kept her true feelings well hidden.”

“I didn’t just lose one daughter to drugs, I lost two. It breaks my heart.”

Joana took the £7 ecstasy pill with friends in a final blowout after graduating last summer.

But she became ill and started having fits after taking the dodgy drug at the university’s union club.

Marcia, who was living in Stockholm with her dad, “couldn’t stand up to losing her sister”, according to their mum.

Mosca, has two other daughters Cecilia, 26, and Daisy, nine, added: “When you have an accidental death like Joana’s there’s a domino effect.”

The devastated mum has already pleaded to others, saying the drug is “not worth the risk”.

“It’s different every time you take it.

“It can have a different effect on your body, it’s made in different ways, in different recipes, in different places, by different people, with different ethics. So, it’s not worth the risk.”

Katherine Lavin, 21, pleaded guilty to selling Ms Burns the drug whilst Benjamin Williams, 25, confessed to supplying Lavin with it.

The pair will be sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on 12 October.

Mum Mosca Burns said she hoped her daughter would be remembered as a maths student, not a girl who died from taking drugs

Mrs Burns previously said she hoped her daughter, an aspiring maths teacher, would be remembered more as an inspiration for girls to take up maths rather than as a victim of illegal drugs.

The inquest heard how Joana was with a group of friends who all agreed to take the drug, which one of them bought in the form of powder.

They each then made it into “bombs”.

Joana’s heartbroken boyfriend Lewis Birch said the Tuesday Club at Sheffield University students’ union was an event known for ecstasy use.

Joana took two “bombs”, one before she arrived and another in the early hours of the morning.

A friend said she was not a “regular drug user”, adding: “It was just supposed to be a one-off final fling to finish university.”

She and another student were rushed to hospital in Sheffield city centre, but Joana died the same night, on June 7 last year.

Mr Birch earlier paid tribute to his girlfriend, saying: “I will always love you and you will be in my heart forever.

“I will never forget you and would give absolutely everything to have you back in my life.

“If anyone is ever thinking of taking any sort of drug – don’t full stop. It has torn my life apart. I am absolutely crushed right now.”
