CARBON monoxide detectors sold on Amazon and eBay could actually “pose a threat” to consumers after they failed a series of safety checks.

An investigation by consumer group Which? found two alarms for sale from both of the online retailers didn’t detect the deadly gas to a good enough standard.

you can buy the Aico Ei208 in Amazon and eBay for around £18.99

The X-Sense CO3D, which costs around £25 online, and the Aico Ei208, priced at around £18.99, have been added to a list of seven other “Don’t Buy” alarms.

A functioning detector could be the difference between life or death, so its important to know if the alarms you buy online really are up to scratch.

The consumer group replicates the same 33 tests carried out by British Standards, which makes sure products meet a high standard.

This was to find out how the detectors react to different amounts of potentially fatal carbon monoxide and how they recover three months after they’ve been tested.

The X-Sense carbon monoxide detector failed three of the tests

How to get a free smoke or carbon monoxide detector

SINCE October 2015, landlords are legally required to install smoke alarms in rental properties and could face fines of up to £5,000 if they fail to comply.

They only cost from around £5 in most DIY stores.

Fire and rescue services across the country offer free home fire safety visits and offer advice to minimise the risk of a blaze.

They may fit free alarms during the assessment, so visit your local fire service website to book a visit.

If a product fails even one of the tests, the consumer group immediately adds it to its Don’t Buy list.

Both the Aico Ei208 and X-Sense CO3D failed three of them.

Following on from the results, eBay has promised to remove the alarms from sale.

A spokesperson said: “The safety of customers is our number one priority and we work closely with bodies such as Trading Standards to ensure listings sold on our marketplace comply with the law.

“The items flagged by Which? have been removed.”

Previously, Amazon has taken steps to remove such items from sale too, but it’s what the retailer will do this time around.

Manufacturer Aico told Which? that it takes alarm quality and reliability very seriously, and pointed out that all of its alarms are independently tested.

They added that this is the first problem it has had with these alarms since they’ve been on sale since 2010.

Even though you haven’t been able to buy the other dodgy alarms on eBay or Amazon since June, it’s worth checking to see what model you have at home.

The Topolek GEHS007AW CO and a range of unbranded alarms are already on the list.

In the meantime, Which? is advising homeowners to stop using the alarms and buy a model from their Best Buy list.

The Sun has contacted X-Sense, Amazon and Aico for comment.

Earlier this year, a shocking report showed that fire alarms can take up to 10 minutes to go off, while others failed to sound completely putting lives at risk.
