THE city rocked by the killing of 11-year-old Rhys Jones more than a decade ago has witnessed an explosion in gun violence.

Seven shootings took place in Liverpool over a 17-day period last month, it has emerged.

Two men died and two others were injured.

Police say the attacks are unrelated but communities are fearful.

The Sun can reveal active gangs include the Kirkstone Riot Squad and Linacre Young Guns in Sefton — as well as the Fern Hill Road and Stanley Road gangs.

One ex-detective said: “Street gangs run cannabis farms and some will sell crack cocaine and heroin. Shootings are often about protecting their market.”

Everton fan Rhys — whose story was told in a TV drama Little Boy Blue — was gunned down as he walked home from a football kickabout in 2007.

Eleven people were jailed over the killing.

Sean Mercer, who was 16 when he fired the fatal shot, and 18 when sentenced, was jailed for a minimum of 22 years.
