New photo Anthony Honeyball hoping Ms Parfois can be sweet as sugar in Ladbrokes Trophy

THE weather has been good to Anthony Honeyball.

Every drop of rain that’s fallen on Newbury’s track this week will help his Ladbrokes Trophy hope Ms Parfois.

She thrived on soft ground last season, landing a hat-trick of wins before finishing runner-up at both Cheltenham and Aintree.

But it’s not just the rain that’s given Honeyball his best chance of landing Newbury’s greatest chase.

Storms battering Ireland have grounded the biggest of thorns in the Dorset trainer’s side – Willie Mullins.

The Irish Champion trainer was hoping to run recent Clonmel Oil Chase winner Kemboy in the £250,000 thriller but choppy seas stopped his intended ferry from making the crossing.

Mullins’ Rathvinden edged out Ms Parfois by half a length in the National Hunt Chase at last season’s Cheltenham Festival.

Little more than 24 hours later Honeyball’s Acey Milan was fourth in the Champion Bumper behind a trio of Mullins horses.

Honeyball groaned: “If you take Willie Mullins out the equation we would have had three Cheltenham Festival winners.

“We’ve had two seconds behind Willie Mullins horses and we had a fourth in the Champion Bumper with three Willie Mullins horses in front of us.

“Halfway up the run-in it looked like Ms Parfois was going to find enough. It was so frustrating – I was spitting.”

The trainer’s mood was soothed by Ms Parfois’ next start. She ran another blinder to be runner-up behind Terrefort in the Grade 1 Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree when today’s rivals Elegant Escape and Black Corton were both behind.

The handicapper might just have made a mistake by failing to give her more weight for those efforts and Honeyball believes the Ladbrokes Trophy is made for her.

He added: “She’s in great form.

GET ON TREND Who will win the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury this Saturday?

“Ideally I would have liked to get a run into her before but, once we knew we couldn’t, we always worked her with that in mind. She’s been away three times.

“It’s a fantastic race to be involved in – we’re here to win.

“I’ve watched this race for years. I know it’s a handicap but it’s the nearest thing to the Gold Cup in some ways. Gold Cup horses win it.

“It suits those second-season chasers with a little bit of upside to them. Win, lose or draw this is the right race to have a go at – she has the right credentials.”

Ms Parfois is owned by Dorset-based book distributor Martyn Chapman. Where Ms Parfois is concerned it was love at first sight.

Chapman explained: “I’ve been in syndicates and partnerships but Ms Parfois is the first horse I’ve owned completely.

“I liked her so much I didn’t want to share her – I was greedy. Within a month she’d won a bumper.

“To own a horse of her quality is a dream come true.

“I’ve followed racing since I was a youngster – I go back to the days of when Arkle and Mill House were winning this race.

“I was here to see Denman win both times so to come to this day with a horse with a chance of winning is just incredible.”

If one of jump racing’s greatest prizes wasn’t enough Chapman has some more Grand plans.

He added: “The Grand National would be ideal race for her if you could guarantee soft ground.

“No mare has won the National in my lifetime. The last one was Nickel Coin six months before I was born in 1951. That would be a dream.”

If Ms Parfois underlines those Aintree ambitions with victory in today’s Ladbrokes Trophy, plenty of punters will have Honey to thank for the money.

TAKE on the choppy waters of this tricky handicap with PADLEYOUROWNCANOE. He landed a couple of races on soft ground last season before running with credit when upped in grade.

Getty Images - Getty

My fancy seemed well suited by the big field when fourth in the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap at the Cheltenham Festival.

There’s been nothing wrong with his efforts this season but he’s just seemed to lack the required pace over 2m on faster ground. The demands of today’s race look ideal.

Champ could easily be too good for this lot. He went down by a neck to smart Vinndication on his hurdles debut in January before landing a couple of novices’ hurdles in the spring.

The handicapper hasn’t been too severe but he’s not as streetwise as most of his rivals.

Speedo Boy won in the manner of a well-treated horse at Cheltenham two weeks ago. He’s sure to win more races but he wouldn’t want the ground to get any softer.

Barters Hill would eat this on his best form but he’s had stacks of problems. It remains to be seen how good he is these days.

Big Chief Benny is obviously well weighted after two years off the track. I’m not worried about his absence with Alan King doing the training.

PARF TO GLORY Your in-depth preview to the Ladbrokes Trophy this Saturday

BALLYMOY is the boy for the Ladbrokes Gerry Fielden.

He progressed rapidly throughout last season. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ ace completed a hat-trick with a strong late burst to land the 20-runner Novices’ Championship Final at Sandown in April.

It was good to see him pick up where he left off when winning a nice little Chepstow handicap last month and he looks ready for this step up in grade.

Mont Des Avaloirs was fourth behind Ballymoy at Sandown as he’s weighted to reverse that form. He reverts to hurdling after an uninspiring chase debut.

Whatswrongwithyou was another useful novice last season. A brace of Newbury wins saw him go off favourite for the Imperial Cup.

He was far from disgraced in third especially as he didn’t have the smoothest passage through. My main worry is that he did improve a fair bit for his comeback run last season.

Global Citizen was beaten favourite for the Grade 1 Top Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree’s Grand National meeting having bolted up in the Dovecote at Kempton.

He didn’t run badly on his return but I’ve a feeling he might have been over-rated by the handicapper.

STEAM into Thomas the bank engine in the Ladbrokes Trophy. I was hugely impressed with THOMAS PATRICK last season.

His jumping was exceptional when he notched up a Newbury victory in March before following up at Aintree on Grand National day.

For much of his comeback at Sandown he looked likely to win.

His jumping was deadly accurate and I’m sure it was just a lack of fitness that allowed Elegant Escape to get past in the closing stages.

Tom Lacey’s ace will be much sharper today and is 5lbs better off at the weights today. The longer trip will also help but Thomas Patrick is not just a mud-loving slogger.

He could easily jump them into the ground from a prominent position under Richard Johnson and I wouldn’t put anyone off backing him ante-post for the Gold Cup at monster odds.

Ms Parfois is a similar type. She jumps well, stays well and does well.

After rattling off a soft-ground hat-trick she finished runner-up in the 4m National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham and the Grade 1 Mildmay Novices’ Chase.

The recent rain has given her chance a real boost and this is just the sort of race she is made for. Elegant Escape beat Black Corton in the John Francome Chase at this meeting 12 months ago.

He was a fair way behind Ms Parfois when third at Aintree but today’s rack will suit him much better. I just feel he might have shown his hand more than Thomas Patrick.

Dingo Dollar had a nice spin over hurdles to set him up for today but his form doesn’t match up to that of some of his rivals.

DON’T be a Village idiot. It would be stupid to ignore DOITFORTHEVILLAGE. He’s back to the same handicap rating as when winning at Cheltenham last November.

Paul Henderson’s hope tried to win that same race without a prep run this year and he was putting up a big show until slipping badly after jumping the second-last fence.

That should have put the edge on him and today’s softer ground won’t be a problem.

The recent rain won’t have helped Bigmartre. He needs to bounce back from a disappointing effort on his return to action but it wouldn’t be too wise to hold that against him.

His form from last season was good with a trio of wins including the Grade 2 Future Champions’ Chase at Ayr. It has to be said he seems best on decent ground and that has to be a worry.

Lady Buttons is a lovely mare. She has won twice from three runs over fences and she was successful in a mares’ Listed hurdle on her return at Wetherby.

That race lacked depth but ground conditions will be in her favour today.

Top Gamble hasn’t won for two-and-a-half years but he has faced some stiff tasks. Kerry Lee’s ace has slipped in the weights and could be dangerous if ready to rock first time out.

IT’S Summer time in the BetVictor Fighting Fifth Hurdle.

SUMMERVILLE BOY put in a remarkable last burst to win the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham having lost plenty of ground at the last two jumps.

He had previously beaten Kalashnikov in the Tolworth far more convincingly than he did at the Festival but I’ve no doubt he improved for each run.

There has to be a decent chance he’s stepped forward a fair way over the summer. Both his Grade 1 wins came on heavy ground but I’m not worried about today’s conditions.

They could even be in his favour as the pace might be quicker than on testing ground and that would certainly help.

Taking on dual Champion Hurdler Buveur D’Air is not going to be easy. His only hurdles defeat came when third behind Altior in possibly the hottest Supreme at Cheltenham in 2016.

Since then he’s bossed the top races but I’ve no doubt this is far from a vintage bunch of 2m hurdlers.

Samcro might not achieved what Buveur D’Air has yet but most were talking up as a future champ when he beat Summerville Boy’s stablemate Black Op in the Ballymore at Cheltenham.

His crown has slipped a little since then as he fell when odds-on favourite for Punchestown’s Champion Hurdle and he was handed a surprise defeat by Bedrock on his return.

I’m sure he’s going to need further to show his best.

3.20

PUT the BetVictor Rehearsal Chase to the Test. Promising TESTIFY impressed in three small-field races last winter before being found out at Cheltenham and Aintree in the spring.

He still has stacks of potential and he’s had a wind operation since he last ran. I’ve always thought he would be best over 3m.

The only times he’s run over today’s trip since winning a novices’ hurdle was in Grade 1 races. This looks a very winnable race and I’m really keen on him.

Ballydine ended last season with a Sandown win in January. The form hasn’t really worked out and he’s a horse who’s had his problems.

Bishops Road had a hard race when runner-up over 3m4f at Haydock last weekend. It would be some effort to win this just seven days later.

Big River is one I’m interested in. He has always threatened to develop into a useful stayer and I’ve a feeling he will be at his best this season.

New photo Syrian refugee 'waterboarded' by school bullies begged officials to step in WEEKS before attack

MP Barry Sheerman was contacted by a teen Syrian refugee weeks before he was waterboarded at school in a sickening racial attack - but nothing was done

MP Barry Sheerman was contacted by a teen Syrian refugee weeks before he was waterboarded at school in a sickening racial attack - but nothing was done

A little over a month ago, Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman received an email from one of his constituents. It was from a 15-year-old boy and titled: ‘Complaint. Please help me.’

Underneath, he catalogued, in chilling detail, the physical and psychological abuse he had been subjected to by bullies at his school.

They had, he said, doused him in water, thrown an egg at him, broken his arm, and even set his hair on fire.

‘On a number of occasions,’ the youngster revealed, ‘I have observed my abusers laughing and recording me on their smart phones without my permission.’

Behind this harrowing testimony is a story which has dominated the headlines this week.

For the writer of this email is a Syrian refugee called Jamal. He was identified this week after a sickening video of him allegedly being ‘waterboarded’ was posted online.

The footage shows him being headbutted and dragged to the ground by the neck before his attacker threatens ‘to drown him’ by pouring a bottle of water over his face as fellow pupils at Almondbury Community School, just outside Huddersfield, cheer.

Yesterday, the incident prompted Theresa May to say Britain remains a ‘welcoming country’ despite the ‘sickening’ bullying of a child refugee. The Prime Minister added that she had been horrified by footage of the playground attack.

Could there be a more damning commentary of the world we now live in? What happened to Jamal seems especially shocking because he thought Britain was a place where he would be safe. A place where he could be happy. A place where his family had sought sanctuary from the horrors of war-torn Syria.

Indeed, the more we learn about his background, the sadder this story becomes; his childhood, according to a relative we spoke to this week, has been defined by ‘fear, instability and struggle’.

Jamal was born in the ancient Syrian city of Homs, a city once dubbed the ‘capital of the revolution’ after its inhabitants embraced a call to overthrow Bashar al-Assad’s regime back in 2011.

They paid a terrible price in the brutal government-led backlash; Jamal himself was barely eight when a number of his extended family were abducted, tortured and murdered by the Assad regime.

Their lives in grave danger, Jamal and his family fled to neighbouring Lebanon, the nearest safe haven. There, his parents and younger sister, now aged 13, would spend the next six years in desperate conditions. They, along with more than a million Syrian refugees, lived in makeshift tents, sleeping on dirt floors.

Finally, in 2016, they were given safe passage to this country by the United Nations. The British Government promised to resettle up to 20,000 of the Syrian diaspora, and Jamal and his family were among the lucky few who were welcomed here.

The bully approaches his victim before headbutting him

More than £108,000 has been raised for a teenage Syrian refugee after a video of him being bullied at school was posted online. The victim, in white and wearing a blue cast on his left arm, was approached on the school field as others looked on

Or so it seemed.

They were placed in Almondbury, one of the oldest and prettiest villages on the edge of the Pennine moors on the outskirts of Huddersfield. The former mill town has a higher than average number of residents from ethnic minorities. The largest (making up nearly 16 per cent of the population) describe themselves as Asian.

Around 100 Syrian refugees, in particular, ended up in the Huddersfield area. Jamal’s family were given a three-bedroomed end-of terrace council house on a cul de sac, near Almondbury Community School.

Jamal described the optimism he initially felt on his arrival in Yorkshire in his one and only TV interview a few days ago.

‘I was thinking my life was going to be good, my future is really going to be really good if I study at school,’ he said poignantly.

In fact, Jamal says he and his sister — the only Syrian children in their respective classes — became targets for bullies within just a month of starting school. Neither of his parents speak English so they couldn’t make the case for their children. But Jamal, a bright boy, had learned good English in the two years he had been here. In desperation, he decided he had no choice but to help himself as he felt nothing was being done to protect him at school.

In the video, the attacker, carrying a water bottle, headbutts him, and pushes him to the ground

He not only had the wherewithal to send an email to the local authority, Kirklees Council, but also to individual councillors, the Department of Education, Ofsted and the police.

That email found its way to veteran MP Barry Sheerman.

‘I did everything I could to support him,’ Mr Sheerman, who also lives in Almondbury, told the Mail this week. He said he was satisfied the authorities had ‘responded positively’ but said he had enormous sympathy for Jamal.

‘The tragedy is that Huddersfield is a cosmopolitan, university town, a great place to live.’

It is clear from the email, though, that the so-called ‘waterboarding’ episode was far from the only incident. It occurred on October 25 on the school playing fields.

Police said they were sent a video of what happened at the time — before it was posted on social media this week — and interviewed the suspect on November 6, after which the case was reviewed by a youth offending team, who recommended further action; a teenager is to appear before a youth court for the alleged attack.

Officers also ‘fully investigated’ a wrist injury (Jamal refers to this as a broken arm in the email) he sustained on October 7 and three youths were subsequently interviewed. No further action was taken ‘as the evidential test required to prosecute was not met’.

Nevertheless, the video shows Jamal with his arm in a cast, so he wasn’t making it up.

We now know, of course, that, previously his hair was set on fire and he’d had an egg thrown at him, too.

Police have also confirmed they are investigating an assault on Jamal’s sister, a video of which went viral as well. Footage showed girls trying to pull off her hijab and pushing her to the ground.

How did all this make Jamal feel? ‘I was feeling like I couldn’t study,’ he revealed in that moving TV interview. ‘I woke up at night and just started crying. They think I’m different, different from them. It was really bad. I don’t feel safe at school. I was feeling unsafe everywhere — even to go to the shop. Sometimes I say to my dad, I don’t want to go to school any more.’

The bully then holds his victim's throat she her pours water over his face

Jamal’s ordeal, since it became public, has brought out the best — and worst — in British society.

Crowdfunders have raised £150,000 for his family. Nearly 10,000 people contributed to the GoFundMe appeal after a clip of the ‘waterboarding’ incident surfaced on the internet.

But Tommy Robinson, the former English Defence League leader, defended the 16-year-old accused of picking on Jamal. In a series of poisonous rants on Instagram and Facebook, Robinson (real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon) claimed Jamal was not ‘innocent’.

He accused him of joining in an assault on a ‘white girl’ at Almondbury Community School.

Later, the mother of the alleged victim posted a message on Robinson’s site denying Jamal was responsible. Robinson further claimed the case went to court, but a spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said they were not aware of any such case. Robinson has since retracted his claims. And it is not only the Far Right who have been accused of using the plight of Jamal to peddle their own political message.

Members of the Muslim community have also been criticised.

Around 30 protesters, from a group calling themselves ‘British Asians’, gathered outside Almondbury Community School on Thursday to show their support for Jamal. But most, if not all, were from outside the area, including Mirban Aslam, 41, a bricklayer from Bradford. He complained that the ‘system’ had failed Jamal and accused Almondbury of a ‘cover-up’. When the Mail spoke to him yesterday, he denied trying to politicise events.

‘The idea of the protest was to generate national media coverage of the issues, for other victims of bullying and racism to come forward and to bring out the truth on this matter from the school.’

The attacker then loosens his grip, the victim gets up and calmly walks away as other students watch on

Not everyone, including Muslim parents with children at Almondbury, saw it that way. ‘I can’t seem to understand why they think protesting is going to help a situation like this,’ read one message left on the website of the local paper. ‘What about all the children at school today. Will they not be frightened seeing all these people? Getting very much out of hand now.’ The message was from Zoya Hussain.

Others voiced similar concerns. ‘It’s an absolute f****** joke. There are innocent children in the school and three of them are mine. All you protesters are worse than the bullies, making innocent children scared and making us worry!’

A third added: ‘This isn’t fair. Our kids are at school petrified, most didn’t wanna go today. It’s not on, it’s frightening them.’

Either way, Jamal’s family say they will be using the money raised by wellwishers to leave Huddersfield.

‘They don’t want to live here any more,’ said their lawyer Tasnime Akunjee. ‘The level of abuse the children received has become too much. It’s early days on exactly where they will relocate to, but I have been advising them and they need to think about that now. They need to take stock and get over the shock of it all. The children need to move on and get on with their lives.’

The terrible irony is that, after the horrors of Homs, Huddersfield is the place where they should be ‘getting on with their lives’.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”

Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”

New photo Parachutist is left dangling from a street light over a motorway after drifting off course

This is the astonishing moment a parachutist was left hanging from a street light over a busy motorway after drifting off course.

The dashcam footage, filmed on a road in St Petersburg, Russia, captured the man as he dangled from a light by the side of the road.

His parachute had become stuck on one of two lights attached to a tall metal pole, leaving the daredevil hanging precariously from his safety wires.

Cars came to a halt on both sides of the six-lane motorway as he continued to flail his limbs in the air.

The parachutist span in circles as he dangled - and a motorist on the opposite side of the motorway stopped his car to film him.

A further three cars and a van then pulled to the side of the road as the dashcam footage moved closer to the stranded man.

A small group of people stood below him as an apparent rescue mission went underway to release him from the light.

Dozens of viewers commented on the extraordinary scenes. One said: 'This is how a Christmas tree toy feels hanging on a tree.'

Another commented: 'Just an ordinary day in Russia.'

New photo Today’s FREE Horse racing tips: The Betting Spy’s top picks for Saturday’s racing at Newbury and Newcastle

IT looks likely to be Patrick’s Day at Newbury, three months early, in the Ladbrokes Trophy (3.00).

THOMAS PATRICK ticks all the boxes for this traditionally red-hot handicap chase, which will be the ‘Hennessy’ to most of us for many years yet.

This is a race that suits progressive second-season chasers and Thomas Patrick has had just five runs over fences, winning three, including a hugely impressive success at Aintree on Grand National day.

He runs off 9lb higher now but he improved again on his reappearance when just pipped by Elegant Escape at Sandown.

The winner should go well again but he is 5lb worse off with the runner-up so will not find it easy.

Thomas Patrick’s jumping is a real asset and he will relish this test. He loves to race up with the pace and Richard Johnson rides such types so well. The recent rain is in his favour, in fact the softer the better.

PAT ON THE BACK Don’t miss our pinstickers guide to the Ladbrokes Trophy

The same is true for Ms Parfois, who has no stamina worries having been just touched off in the four-miler at the Cheltenham Festival.

She should have a good season but this is very difficult to win without a prep race – she could be one for the Welsh National at the end of the month.

Dingo Dollar, another second-season chaser, has had a run – and a very promising one it was when fourth at this track over hurdles. He could reward each-way backers.

American was well-fancied for this race 12 months ago when he flopped but he then ran second in the Cotswold Chase and, if he could regain his best form of two seasons ago, would have a squeak.

His young Irish rider, Aine O’Connor, is good value for her 5lb claim and American is worth a market check.

Beware The Bear is fairly treated on his reappearance win last season but failed to match that run subsequently so is probably one to beware.

But The Young Master, although he seems to have been around for ever, is still Young enough at nine and was impressive when winning at Cheltenham two weeks ago.

He is 3lb well-in under his penalty and is not out of things.

Earlier SPEEDO BOY can land the Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle at 1.50.

He won far more easily than the length winning distance implies at Cheltenham last time and a 6lb rise does not look enough to prevent a follow up.

He still looks chucked in on his solid form in top-class Flat handicaps and he has more to offer at the winter game.

Champ looked as though he could be well-named when winning his novice hurdles very easily but they were weak events (long odds-on both times) and he may not yet be ready for the hustle of big-field handicaps.

RACECARDS Get all the form and the latest odds with our new racecards

In the Gerry Feilden Hurdle (2.25) there is plenty right about WHATSWRONGWITHYOU.

He won two quality novice events over this course and distance last season with something to spare and was then pitched into top open handicap company in Sandown’s Imperial Cup.

He met trouble in running there before staying on to be third of 17 to Mr Antolini. The form has worked out well and, off the same mark, Whatswrongwithyou will surely go close.

Fitness is unlikely to be a problem as this £50,000 race has probably been on Nicky Henderson’s radar since the summer.

And he will be suited by the likely strong pace with Global Citizen, a good second at Ascot last time, and Whatmore both suited to front-running.

Add in Lisp, who pulled hard when winning at Fontwell, and this should be run to suit my fancy.

Buveur D’Air won his second Champion Hurdle in March
MATTHEW CHILDS

Newcastle stage a fascinating Fighting Fifth Hurdle (2.05), probably the best renewal since the likes of Birds Nest and Sea Pigeon regularly did battle here in the late 70s.

Last season’s top novices, Samcro and Summerville Boy, will surely make this tough for BUVEUR D’AIR but it is hard to oppose the dual Champion, who has not been beaten over hurdles since March 2016, when he was third at Cheltenham, beaten by Altior and Min – not a bad race, that!

Samcro was massively impressive at Cheltenham in March when winning the Ballymore and is a fantastic prospect for chasing further down the line.

He can be excused his defeat by Bedrock, who is back to try and notch another upset, as Gordon Elliott’s horses have tended to need their first run this season but the suspicion is a longer trip would be his preference.

Conditions will be fine for Summerville Boy, who clearly has some engine as he won the Supreme at Cheltenham despite making what looked like a race-losing blunder at the second-last followed be a lesser mistake at the last.

He cannot afford slips like that against Buveur D’Air, whose slick hurdling is one of his greatest assets.

Despite winning a second Champion Hurdle he may not have been at his very best last season but he has had a wind operation over the summer and the Lambourn vibes are very positive.

I spy an eyecatcher...

On Tuesday at Lingfield David Pipe’s NORDIC COMBINED caught the eye when rattling home to take second behind gambled-on winner Champagne Court (100-30 from 10s) in what was probably a decent 2m novice hurdle.

That was the four-year-old’s second run over obstacles and there is more to come.

Having won over 1m6f on the Flat at three he will be well suited by 2m4f or further and is one to look out for, especially in handicaps later in the season.

In the Rehearsal Chase (3.20) give another chance to SHARP RESPONSE, so impressive at Carlisle in October.

He possibly found the rise in class too much too soon at Cheltenham last time but is back in calmer waters here.

The handicapper has dropped him a couple of pounds and, as the Tesco ad used to remind us, every little helps!

Otago Trail knows his way round here, having won the race in 2016, but is up against it with top weight after two years off.

Bishops Road is well weighted but finds winning difficult so the big dangers may be Big River and Ballydine, although both are making their seasonal reappearances and this is always a stern test of stamina and fitness.

Vintage Clouds advanced his Grand National prospects when winning at Haydock last Saturday and, having jumped the controversial fences at that Merseyside track well, he should handle the much-modified ones at the ‘other’ course close to the Mersey!

Equally interesting for a good prize when stamina is at a premium is the runner-up TAKINGRISKS who stayed on well for second.

Nicky Richards’ nine-year-old seems to be improving and, now rated 132, it should not be too difficult to find opportunities for him.

He acts on heavy so proper winter ground will suit him down to the . . . er. . . ground!
