STORM Diana is making its way towards the UK just as the bookies slash the odds on a White Christmas.

Arctic air will bring a seasonal chill, risking significant snowfall over the festive period, according to forecasters.

Former BBC and Met Office forecaster John Hammond said: “Computer forecasts show a revved-up jet stream sweeping away high pressure.

“But there is an increasing chance of much colder air being pushed towards us from the north and east as December progresses.

“The chance of significant snowfall increases. A White Christmas may be more likely this year than most.”

Bookmakers Coral cut white Christmas odds to 7/4 in Aberdeen and 2/1 in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

A spokesman said: “Bookies are in a shiver about the festive freeze.”

Snow hit Scotland on Wednesday last week, with -6.7C UK lows amid easterly winds.

By Wednesday, it will be raining heavily across most of the UK[/caption]

The week ahead will see a low pressure system moving in from the Atlantic, turning recent frosty climates into soggy downpours.

The Met Office forecast strong winds from tonight with Wednesday seeing gusts up to 60mph in the West and more buffetings later in the week and into December.

And Storm Diana will linger over the Atlantic Ocean at the beginning of the week, before merging with a low pressure area to push unsettled conditions firmly over Britain by Wednesday.

Storm Diana will be the fourth major storm system to hit the UK this autumn.

September saw the country battered by Storms Ali and Bronagh, with Storm Callum causing at least three deaths in October.

Below freezing temperatures were recorded in the south east over the weekend, with the mercury dipping to -6.7C.

And if the chill persists then 2018 could turn out to have the UK’s coldest winter in eight years.
