This is the astonishing moment a parachutist was left hanging from a street light over a busy motorway after drifting off course.

The dashcam footage, filmed on a road in St Petersburg, Russia, captured the man as he dangled from a light by the side of the road.

His parachute had become stuck on one of two lights attached to a tall metal pole, leaving the daredevil hanging precariously from his safety wires.

Cars came to a halt on both sides of the six-lane motorway as he continued to flail his limbs in the air.

The parachutist span in circles as he dangled - and a motorist on the opposite side of the motorway stopped his car to film him.

A further three cars and a van then pulled to the side of the road as the dashcam footage moved closer to the stranded man. 

A small group of people stood below him as an apparent rescue mission went underway to release him from the light.

The video, posted to YouTube in May 2015, currently has more than 207,000 views.

Dozens of viewers commented on the extraordinary scenes. One said: 'This is how a Christmas tree toy feels hanging on a tree.'

Another commented: 'Just an ordinary day in Russia.'
