"Many Photos" - Decluttering expert reveals her tips for transforming a messy kitchen bench

Organisational expert Anita Birges is a master when it comes to transforming any cluttered space - and now she's shared her tricks for making over a messy kitchen on a budget.

The professional, who heads up Mise en Place, has a simple mantra when it comes to this area: 'a clear counter equals a calm kitchen'.

It's [the kitchen] is a blank slate, with no real solutions there, so within a matter of 24 hours it's back to where you started,' Anita told the Today show.

Her first port of call when it came to sorting out this area began with dealing with the mess that accumulates on counter-tops such as keys, letters and phone chargers.

Anita said what people often do is place bowls or other containers here as a way to contain the clutter, but this doesn't deal with the problem.

'Her solution is to utilise space under the counter and to attach 'Perch kits'. These are available from Howards Storage World and come in range of sizes.

The kits contain magnetic plates which she attached to the wall using double-sided tape. The containers then attach directly to the plates with the magnets holding them in place.

'These come in all different sizes and they are going to house all these objects off the bench onto the wall,' she said.

To make this area even more streamlined, Anita attached a clear I-Hook to the wall . This accessory creates the perfect area to hang a handbag.

What items did Anita use to transform this kitchen?

* Perch kit: 3-piece starter kit $56.95 (Howards Storage World)

* I-Hook (clear): $14.95 (Howards Storage World)

* Sink caddy with suction cups: $31.95 (Everton)

* Magazine file holder: $9.95 (Officeworks)

* S-Hooks: $4.99 for a 5-pack (Ikea)

* Evo-vac kitchen shelf: $48.95 (Howards Storage World)

* Ladder: $69 (Ikea)

* Baskets:  Set of three (one large and two small) $14 (Kmart)

The sink is often an area which can become cluttered with a whole host of unnecessary items from dish-washing liquid, brushes to rubber gloves.

To deal with this, Anita suggests installing a sink caddy with suction cups.

She says this item puts an end to utensils which normally cause unsightly pools of water because it sits in the sink; anything wet drains and dries here.

Bench space alongside the stove is also an area that often becomes overrun with excess items.

Anita takes a ruthless approach to decluttering this area and starts by removing any items she deems too big or has no use.

This includes over-sized chopping boards, decorative vases and cookbooks.

For those who feel they can't live without their favourite recipe book to hand, Anita offers a nifty solution in the form of a suspended magazine rack.

A white, plastic magazine file holder is attached to the bottom corner of a cupboard using double-sided tape.

The solution also provides the perfect place to store a cellphone that might be charging nearby.

Random utensils stored in a jar has no place within the confines of an organised kitchen.

Anita said she prefers to keep these elevated and will use an Evo-vac double wall-mounted towel rail to do the job.

To hang each item the expert turns to what she describes as her 'best friends' - S-Hooks from Ikea.

'They are going to revolutionise how you store utensils,' she said.

To keep cooking essentials nearby, oils, salt and pepper, herbs and spices, Anita suggests mounting a small shelf.

Her recommendation is to use the Evo-vac kitchen shelf from Howards Storage World, $48.95.

The beauty of this product is that it attaches to the wall using suction, frees up space and looks elegant as well.

Making this area even more functional is the addition of an Evo magnetic knife rack, priced at $29.95.

The final area in the kitchen to get an overhaul is the fruit bowl.

Here, Anita's brilliance really shines as she reveals how it's possible to use a ladder and baskets to create a fabulous storage system.

To do this she uses a ladder, from Ikea, priced at $69, some S-Hooks and some baskets from Kmart, priced at $14 for a set of three (two small, one large) and she 'layers' the fruit according to colour.

Those wanting to really turn their kitchen into steamlined haven will be pleased to know Anita also has tips for dealing with a messy cutlery drawer.

To do this, the expert recommends working with two containers and a clear bench space. You need both for the decluttering process.

Then take everything out, putting items you want to keep in one and items you want to throw away in another.

Her trick when decluttering is to move quickly and while doing so to ask yourself if you have double ups or if the item is broken or rusted.

'Providing you’re serious about decluttering and creating a slower, simpler home, your initial answer is going to be right. So don’t second-guess yourself. And if in doubt – chuck it out (or give it away),' she said previously.

Once this is done, give the drawer a thorough clean with some white vinegar and a clean cloth. Make sure it's also been properly dried.

Before you put the items you're keeping back inside the drawer, group these with similar items.

Also, she said to consider investing in drawer dividers so you can create more than one area to place things within the one drawer.

'I can guarantee you’ll be shocked at how much you can clear out in 10 minutes, and what a difference it will make to the way you feel in your home.'
