LIKE any excited mum-to-be, Meghan Markle is loving the countdown to her due date.
But while the Duchess of Sussex, who let slip her royal baby is due in April, will not have to watch the pennies, a new arrival can be an expensive addition to family budgets.
There are, however, ways to make big savings on some baby essentials . . .
- Sweet dream: Where your baby sleeps is very important and can cost a lot but Aldi has you covered. This week their SpecialBuys are all baby-related — with a Moses basket, complete with stand, for just £29.99. The cute crib comes in a whale, elephant or swan design and the cheapest similar basket on the high street is £50 from Mothercare.
Saving: At least £20.01 - Video nights: Keep an eye on your new arrival on the cheap, thanks to Lidl. Baby monitors can cost up to £200, but Lidl’s Big Baby Event starts today and includes a brilliant Motorola video monitor for just £39.99 — down from £69.99.
Saving: £30
- Nappy happy: There is no way to avoid the cost of nappies — parents spend around £23.52 on them during the first month — so stock up at Boots’ baby sale, this week. You can get Pampers Pure Premium Protect nappies for just £5, down from the usual price of £8.
Saving: £3 - Bulk bargain: Buy ahead of time and save big on baby-hygiene essentials. Morrisons’ 64-packs of Nutmeg fragrance-free sensitive baby wipes, 56p, are currently six for £3 — making them 50p a pack.

Hayden Panettiere
Size: 8
Age: 18
Height: 5ft 1in
Weight: 8st
To achieve her kick-ass figure, Hayden – who plays cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes – follows the ‘quartering’ rule. She eats only a quarter of the food on her plate, then waits 20 minutes before deciding whether she needs to eat again.
Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”
Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
kim cattrall
Size: 10-12
Age: 52
Height: 5ft 8in
Weight: 9st 4lb
SATC star Kim swears by gym sessions with Russian kettle bells (traditional cast-iron weights) and the South Beach Diet to give her the body she wants. To avoid overeating, Kim has a radical diet trick – squirting lemon juice on her leftovers – so she won’t carry on picking.
Kim says: “I am no super-thin Hollywood actress. I am built for men who like women to look like women.”
