THOUSANDS of commuters into the capital are facing travel misery today as South Western railway workers began a 48-hour strike.

Staff walked out at midnight in an ongoing row over the future of guards on trains – impacting services until the early hours of Sunday morning.

Trains into London’s Waterloo, Victoria, Clapham Junction, Wimbledon and Richmond stations, will be running on a reduced timetable or with replacement bus services.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union are taking industrial action after a summer of strikes in the ongoing dispute over guards.

It comes as London Underground staff also went on strike today amid a row over a breakdown in industrial relations – causing the Central Line to come to a standstill.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “Our members on South Western Railway remain absolutely united and determined in the fight to defend safety, security and access on the railway despite cynical and repeated attempts by the company to undermine the morale of their own workforce.

“The company has continued to fail to provide any offer that comes close to resolving this dispute and their latest attempts at delaying talks have left us feeling angry and frustrated.”

South Western said it plans to run nearly two thirds of its regular services on Friday and around half on Saturday.

An SWR spokesperson said: “We are sorry that the RMT has yet again decided to disrupt customers’ journeys this coming Friday and Saturday.

“Our train planners, together with our contingency guards from across the company, as well as those guards who usually work on strike days, will ensure we provide as many services as possible for our customers.

“We continue to call on the RMT to talk to us rather than strike, so that we can provide the best service possible for our customers.”

The industrial action kicked off on July 26, in the first of eight weeks of travel misery for rail users, before a further strike on September 15.

The RMT union, which represents guards and drivers, called for the strikes over plans to remove staff from trains, which would then become driver-only-operated (DOO).

Unions have said the move could potentially make trains more dangerous because no one will be keeping an eye on people getting on and off trains as well as keeping passengers safe during their journeys.

However, the Office of Road and Rail has insisted the trains will be safe so long as the right equipment and training is provided.

SWR said: “We would like to make it completely clear that we will continue to roster a guard on all our trains – including our new suburban fleet to be introduced from late 2019, and that our future plans require more, not less guards.

“We will continue to provide as many additional services as possible on RMT strike days and thank all those employees who have helped keep our passengers moving despite the RMT action.”
