DEONTAY WILDER has revealed he nearly lost an eye in a freak training accident with an elastic band.
WBC world heavyweight champion Wilder says he was knocked cold to the floor after a gym session using stretch bands went horribly wrong.
And the American, who will defend his title against Tyson Fury in December, was lucky to escape with his sight are inflicting a damaging injury in the accident.
Wilder, 32, said: “I tore a ligament in my eye, I was using a stretch band on my foot and I was talking to my trainer Jay and we were going over tactics for the fight.
“I wasn’t paying attention and the band came back.
“It was fully stretched out cos I’ve got long legs and it came back, you would think a spirit done that.
“When it did that it knocked me to the ground, I fell asleep. I wouldn’t say knockout. It was crazy.”
The accident happened when Wilder was in camp for his first fight with Bermane Stiverne, which he won on points to claim the WBC title in January 2015
Wilder defends his title against Fury on December 1 after his proposed unification clash with Anthony Joshua fell through.
The American has a reputation for his fearsome, but unorthodox style, and many critics believe a fully fit and sharp Fury has too much skill for him in the ring.

But the unbeaten Bronze Bomber insists he is a much better boxer than people think – and if Fury underestimates him he is in for a big surprise.
He added: “There are so many things that I can do in the ring that I don’t get credit for. I don’t know whether to take it as a compliment or not.
“There are a lot of things that guys look over and that is how they get knocked out.
“They aren’t expecting me to do certain things. They didn’t expect me to knock Ortiz out with an uppercut, not even I.
“The opportunity is there, everything I do is a muscle memory.”
